Activists with the political protest group Climate Defiance interrupted a Tuesday night church event held by Rep. Tom Suozzi (D-NY) by giving him a diaper and kneepads as insulting “gifts.” The activists targeted Suozzi because he was one of seven House Democrats who recently voted in favor of allocating $64.4 billion to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the federal agency that oversees Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Suozzi apologized on Monday for his vote, saying he failed to see it as a referendum on the violence of ICE agents, who have garnered national backlash after multiple videos showed them killing two protestors, including Renee Good, a queer mother of three.

“I wanted to get something for you: This is an adult diaper for when you pee yourself in front of Donald Trump,” said activist Davidson Boswell. “You can wear this, it’s really nice. You’re the type of leader we need right now, someone who soils himself when the fascists are at our door.”

“Sorry, I didn’t know we were doing gifts,” said another activist, Steven Roberts, who is a gay comedian based in New York City. “I have some kneepads for you, you can use these while you blow Donald Trump. Alternatively, you can get off your knees and you can stand up to him literally and figuratively. Abolish ICE, defund them. You do not show any moral courage. You are funding the Gestapo.”

As a silver-haired attendee pulled activist Walter Masterson out of the church, Masterson screamed, “Nine people were killed by ICE this month, and you’re throwing me out while I’m reading their names? How f**king dare you?”

In a Facebook message that Suozzi posted on Monday morning, he wrote, “I failed to view the DHS funding vote as a referendum on the illegal and immoral conduct of ICE in Minneapolis. I hear the anger from my constituents, and I take responsibility for that. I have long been critical of ICE’s unlawful behavior, and I must do a better job demonstrating that.” He then called the deaths of Minneapolis residents at the hands of ICE a “tragedy.”

Kneepads have become a homophobic and insulting gift to mock male leaders who are seen as too subservient to other male leaders. The idea is that performing oral sex on another man is degrading.

At the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, last week, California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) showed off knee pads that he said were for leaders “selling out” to the Trump administration.

“The last round of knee pads sold out, just as our law firms are selling out. Many American universities are selling out, and yes, many corporate leaders are selling out to this administration,” Newsom said. “I can’t take this complicity of people rolling over. I should have brought a bunch of knee pads for all the world leaders.”
