“We are literally just people”: A trans man wonders how his mere existence can be seen as a threat

24 janvier 2026 à 20:00

As part of LGBTQ Nation’s January issue, we asked readers to tell us how one year of the second Trump administration has affected their lives and what they hope LGBTQ+ leaders and allies do differently in 2026.

We received dozens of submissions and are sharing them throughout the month.

James Eden, a 28-year-old queer trans man, wrote about how badly he wants to be seen as a human being who simply wants to love and be happy.

Here is what he had to say.

How has living under the second Trump administration affected you personally over the last year?

I don’t think there was a single day this year when I wasn’t worried about every single queer person in this country. I have family members who are queer, who are trans, myself included. I see queer people every day online speaking about how terrified they are of losing jobs, healthcare, and being attacked.

I see our rights on the verge of being stripped away as we are treated like threats, like something awful. Like evil people just waiting to do horrible things. We are literally just people trying to live our lives. We want our loved ones to be safe and happy and healthy, the same as everyone else. We are not a threat. But we will also not be exterminated.

We have been here as long as everyone else on this planet. We are here, and we always will be.

What do you hope to see from LGBTQ+ leaders and allies in 2026?

I don’t even know.

Less in-fighting?

Literally, who cares what label you’re choosing for yourself or what labels you aren’t? We’ll never get anywhere if we don’t go there together.

STATUTORY: A Turing-complete language in 17th-century legal English

24 janvier 2026 à 20:06

I was thinking about how the English language allows for grammatically correct sentences containing the phrases "that that" and "had had" and "will will."

It looks like a y-combinator might have fallen out.

With the help of some LLMs and tree-sitter, I slapped together a programming language that reads like 17th century legal prose.

I hope you find this as silly and interesting as I did.

Game Description
REAL HAJWALA PHYSICS

Hajwala isn’t typical drifting, it’s a vibe straight from the Gulf streets. Drift the Arab way, go into high speed and lose control on the highway. It’s all about sliding sideways with style on highways and open roads, showing off your skills while staying in full control. It’s loud, wild, and a lot of fun. In Highway Drifter: Hajwala Simulator you get to feel all that energy. Whether you’re cruising the desert or speeding through mountain roads, it’s your chance to shine. Think you got what it takes to drift like a real Muhajwel?

Game Features

  • MID-GAME CAR CUSTOMIZATION – Customize everything during gameplay, your car is all about your style. Pick your favorite shade of color and choose your tint level, switch up the rims, and mix and match front and back bumpers to match your style. You can even customize your license plate to make it totally yours.
  • ADVANCED PHYSICS TUNING – Highway Drifter has an advanced car physics tuning system, you have full control on your car build, you can change car speed, max engine torque, suspension, gear ratios, car weight, you name it, you can edit it. Create different custom tuning setups, including drift, hajwala, drag, or even low speed cruising, the tuning has no limits, you can even break it.
  • FROM DESERT TO CITY – Race across hot desert roads, drift through the narrow streets of European cities, or take on sharp turns in the rocky canyon mountains. Each map brings a new style, a new feel, and a new challenge. No matter where you drive, your skills will be tested. Are you ready to drift through them all?

There’s One Week Left In The Public Domain Game Jam!

Par : Leigh Beadon
24 janvier 2026 à 20:00

We’re nearing the end of January, and you know what that means: we’re on the home stretch of the latest installment of our annual public domain game jam, Gaming Like It’s 1930! We’ve already gotten some intriguing submissions, and we expect to get plenty more before the deadline of January 31st, but just because time is running out doesn’t mean you can’t still get involved. A week is plenty of time to make a game!

Whether you’re a new or experienced designer, now’s the time to head over to the game jam page on Itch, read the full rules, and get some ideas about works you might use. Once the submission window closes, we’ll be diving in to explore all the entries and select winners in our six categories, each of whom will receive a prize.

There are lots of great tools available that let anyone build a simple digital game, like interactive fiction engine Twine and the storytelling platform Story Synth from Randy Lubin, our game design partner and co-host of this jam (check out his guide to building a Story Synth game in an hour here on Techdirt). And an analog game can be as simple as a single page of rules. For inspiration, you can have a look at last year’s winners and our series of winner spotlight posts that take a look at each year’s winning entries in more detail.

As always, a huge thanks to everyone who is participating. We can’t wait to start playing the games you’ve made, and showing off the winners as examples of why a growing public domain benefits us all.

Wireless MIDI Controller Has Lots Of Knobs

Par : Lewin Day
24 janvier 2026 à 21:00

We live in a golden age for MIDI controllers. [rheslip]’s contribution to the milieu is a twisty take on the format, in that it’s covered in an array of knobs. Thus the name—Twisty 2.

The controller can be built using the Raspberry Pi Pico or Pico 2. It’s set up to read a 4×4 array of clickable encoders, plus two bonus control knobs to make 18 in total, which are read via a 74HC4067 analog mux chip. There’s also an SK6812 RGB LED for each encoder, and an OLED display for showing status information. MIDI output is via USB, or, if you purchased the W variant of the Pi Pico/Pico 2, it can operate wirelessly over Bluetooth MIDI instead. The controller is set up to send MIDI CC messages, program changes, or note on/off messages depending on its configuration. Flipping through different modes is handled with the bottom set of encoders and the OLED display.

Few musicians we’ve ever met have told us they learned how to play the encoders, and yet. The cool thing about building your own MIDI controller is you can tune it to suit whatever method of performance strikes your fancy. If the name of this build alone has you inspired, you could always whip up a MIDI controller out of a Twister mat.
