A list of 30 agents working for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) shows that 29 of them have been charged with sexual offenses, and two-thirds committed sexual crimes against children, according to a list published by the Ohio Immigrant Alliance and the Pacific Antifascist Collective.
“The off-duty Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent who killed Keith Porter, Jr. has a history of racism, child abuse, and explosive tempers. Despite murdering Porter in cold blood, Brian Palacios remains free without charge and employed by ICE,” the groups’ website states, invoking the name of Porter, a Black 43-year-old father of two who was fatally shot by an ICE officer on New Year’s Eve outside his apartment complex
. “In February 2025, Palacios was barred from having any contact with two of his girlfriend’s children, after they testified that he beat his own sons and frequently made homophobic and racist remarks.”

“[There is] a real problem with gender-based violence by ICE agents, and the agency is not taking it seriously,” Lynn Tramonte, Executive Director of the Ohio Immigrant Alliance, said.
“This culture of violence toward women and children is visible in ICE agents’ officially-sanctioned actions, and the Department of Homeland Security’s unconditional support for their acts of violence,” the website further states.
The website notes that, according to Ms. Magazine, “Across the country, so-called ‘ICE impersonators’ are on the rise as Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) itself has been violently arresting people without warrants, sometimes in plain clothes using unmarked vehicles. Nearly impossible to distinguish between real and fake agents, men have allegedly lied about their identities to intimidate, kidnap, and rape women with precarious immigration statuses, according to survivors’ accounts.”
ICE has launched a $100 million effort to attract new recruits that includes sending geo-targeted advertisements directly to the phones of people located near Mixed Martial Arts fights, NASCAR races, and gun shows. The advertisements use futuristic imagery of war and video games, along with slogans about “defending the homeland” against “invaders.”

You might recall how Republicans (with help from Democrats) suffered a three year embolism over the national security, privacy, and propaganda problems inherent with TikTok — only to turn around and let Trump sell the platform to his technofascist billionaire friends. Who are now already hard at work preparing to do all of the stuff they claimed the Chinese were doing. And probably worse.
The deal, finalized last December, involves offloading a large chunk of TikTok to billionaire right wing Trump ally Larry Ellison (fresh off his acquisition of CBS), the private equity firm Silver Lake (which has broad global investments in Chinese and Israeli hyper-surveillance), anti-democratic zealot Mark Andreessen, and MGX (Abu Dhabi’s state investment firm).
With the paperwork on the “new U.S. TikTok” barely even dry, the company is already informing users that it will be collecting more location data than ever:
“Before this update, the app did not collect the precise, GPS-derived location data of US users. Now, if you give TikTok permission to use your phone’s location services, then the app may collect granular information about your exact whereabouts.”
That’s not great in a country that’s too corrupt to pass even a baseline privacy law, or to regulate dodgy data brokers that hoover up this sensitive location data and then share it with pretty much any nitwit with two nickels to rub together (including domestic and foreign intelligence agencies).
The “new U.S. TikTok” is already seeing a bunch of weird technical problems. And there are already influencers saying that their criticism of ICE is more frequently running afoul of “community standards guidelines,” though I’ve yet to see a good report fleshing these claims out yet.
As we noted last December, this latest TikTok deal is kind of the worst of all worlds. The Chinese still have an ownership stake in the app, and the companies and individual investors who’ve taken over the app have a long, rich history of supporting authoritarianism and widespread privacy violations.
These Trump-linked billionaires clearly didn’t buy TikTok to protect national security, fix propaganda, or address consumer privacy. They clearly don’t support the kind of policies it would take to actually address those issues, like meaningful privacy laws, media consolidation limits, data broker regulation, media literacy education funding, or kicking corrupt authoritarians out of the White House.
And they didn’t just buy TikTok to make money or undermine a competitor they repeatedly failed to out-innovate in the short-form video space (though that’s certainly a lot of it). They did it to expand surveillance. And, as Musk did with Twitter, to control the modern information space in a way that will coddle their ideologies and marginalize or censor opposition voices they disagree with.
As men like Larry Ellison and Marc Andreessen have made abundantly clear to anyone paying attention, their ideologies are unchecked greed and far right wing anti-democratic extremism. Billionaires attempting to dominate media to confuse the public and protect their own, usually selfish best interests is a tale as old as time. And that is, contrary to their claims, the play here as well.
With a new board full of foundationally terrible people, it’s only a matter of time before they, like Elon Musk before them, inevitably start fiddling with the platform and its algorithms to shut down debate and ideology they don’t like. Larry Ellison in particular is clearly attempting to buy up what’s left of crumbling U.S. corporate media and turn it into a safe space for the planet’s unpopular autocrats.
It’s worth reiterating that this was all built on the back of four years of fear mongering about TikTok privacy, propaganda, and national security issues by Republicans who couldn’t actually give the slightest shit about any of those subjects. And aided by the bumbling Keystone Cops in the Democratic party, who actively helped Trump offload the platform to his billionaire buddies.
Then propped up by a lazy corporate press that’s increasingly incapable of explaining to the public what’s actually happening, especially if it involves rich right wingers trying to dominate media.
Most of the dim lawmakers who helped make this happen were kept completely in the dark while this deal was being hashed out by billionaire extremists. And bloviating weirdos like FCC boss Brendan Carr, who spent three years crying like a toddler on cable news about TikTok privacy, will likely never mention the app again now that it’s his extremist authoritarian zealot buddies calling the shots.
I suspect the company will try very hard for a year or so to insist that nothing whatsoever has changed to avoid a mass exodus of TikTok users. Especially in the wake of the promise of new, performative hearings by lawmakers who helped the whole mess happen in the first place.
But the ownership won’t be able to help themselves. Steadily and progressively things will get worse, driving users to another new pesky social media upstart, at which point the billionaire quest for total information control will start all over again.
Three high-ranking Democratic Congress members reintroduced a bill that would create a commission to investigate historic and ongoing impacts of anti-LGBTQ+ military policies on servicemembers and veterans. They reintroduced the bill on the one-year anniversary of President Donald Trump’s executive order kicking transgender people out of the military.
The Commission on Equity and Reconciliation in the Uniformed Services Act — reintroduced on Tuesday by out Rep. Mark Takano (D-CA), Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), and Rep. Sara Jacobs (D-CA) — would create a 15-person commission to study past Department of Defense (DOD) actions “policing sexual orientation and gender identity in the uniformed services, from the beginning of World War II and onward.”

“Approximately 114,000 servicemembers were discharged on the basis of their sexual orientation between WWII and 2011, while an estimated 870,000 LGBTQ servicemembers have been impacted by hostility, harassment, assault, and law enforcement targeting due to the military policies in place,” the bill’s introducers said in a press release.
“These separations are devastating and have long-reaching impacts. Veterans who were discharged on discriminatory grounds are unable to access their benefits, and under the Trump administration, LGBTQ+ veterans and servicemembers have been openly persecuted,” the release added.

The commission created by the legislation would gather testimony and hold hearings on the effects that anti-LGBTQ+ policies had on discharged soldiers’ physical, mental, psychological, financial, and professional well-being, including their ability to access military benefits.
The commission would also study the effects the policy had on straight soldiers, particularly women and people of color who were targeted for their perceived queerness. The commission would then issue a report on its findings to Congress one year after the commission’s first meeting.
The report would include suggestions on how the DOD and government can streamline processes for discharged soldiers to update and amend their military records, how the federal government “may offer an apology” to LGBTQ+ veterans and their families, and “appropriate ways to educate the American public about institutionalized and government-sanctioned discrimination.”
“Qualified servicemembers were hunted down and forced to leave the military at the direction of our government,” said Takano, who is the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee’s ranking member and chairs the Congressional Equality Caucus. “These practices have continued, now with our government targeting transgender servicemembers. The forced separation and dishonorable discharges LGBTQ+ people received must be rectified, benefits fully granted, and dignity restored to those who have protected our freedoms.”
Rep. Jacobs said, “Instead of righting wrongs and making amends to our LGBTQ+ service members and veterans who’ve suffered injustices for decades, I’m ashamed that the Trump administration has doubled down: kicking trans folks out of the military and banning their enlistment.”
“We know that LGBTQ+ service members and veterans have faced so much ugliness — discrimination, harassment, professional setbacks, and even violence — that has led to unjust discharges and disparities in benefits, but we still don’t have a full picture of all the harm caused. That needs to change,” she added.
The bill is supported by the Minority Veterans of America, the Human Rights Campaign, Equality California, SPARTA, and the Transgender American Veterans Association.
One year ago, Trump signed an executive order banning transgender people from the military. The order referred to trans identity as a mental disorder that is selfish, dishonorable, deceitful, and undisciplined. His order affected an estimated 8,000 to 15,000 trans soldiers.
Last May, the Republican-slanted Supreme Court ruled that the Trump administration could implement its trans military ban while lawsuits against it proceed in lower courts. At least one federal judge ruled against the ban, writing that the military’s justifications for banning trans soldiers were “harmful,” “come up very short,” and “invoked derogatory language to target a vulnerable group.”
Trans people were first welcomed to serve out in the military in June 2016 when the administration of then-President Barack Obama ended the Pentagon’s decades-long ban against out trans soldiers. The Obama administration also instructed the Department of Defense to cover the medical costs for trans soldiers’ gender-affirming care.
Sarah Warbelow, Human Rights Campaign Vice President of Legal, wrote, “This discriminatory ban insults their service and puts our national security at risk. Expelling highly trained members of our military undermines military readiness and wastes years of financial and training investments. It also needlessly upends the lives of families who have already sacrificed so much. The Commander-in-Chief should prioritize our military’s safety and readiness, not use his position to issue bans on entire groups of people.”
DADT was instituted in 1992 by President Bill Clinton. Though Clinton initially wanted to allow LGB people to serve as their authentic selves, congressional Republicans and the heads of the U.S. military branches opposed it, so the ban was Clinton’s “compromise.”
However, by 1998, Clinton admitted that DADT hadn’t functioned like he thought it would. The erratically applied policy more than doubled the number of LGB people dishonorably discharged from the military and increased anti-gay sentiment in the ranks. It also led to LGB servicemembers having to lie and stay closeted while they risked being blackmailed, interrogated, and threatened with violence from fellow servicemembers.
Interestingly, the so-called War on Terror, which followed the 2001 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, led to the lowest number of discharged gay and bisexual soldiers in nearly 30 years. This was likely due to them staying closeted and commanders not discharging qualified soldiers. Regardless, it undermined the claim that out servicemembers undermined military readiness.
Concurrently, gay activists and groups like the Servicemembers League Defense Network increased public condemnation of the policy, stating that tens of thousands of gay military members had already successfully served with some degree of outness (and no serious repercussions). These groups also noted that the policy undermined the U.S. military’s supposed virtues of truth, honor, dignity, and respect.
In a December 2010 Senate vote, eight Republican senators crossed party lines to repeal the ban in a 65-31 vote. Four days later, President Obama signed the repeal into law. The next year, the DOD created a Support Plan for Implementation of the repeal. The full repeal went into effect on September 20, 2011.
A 2021 report commissioned by the heads of the U.S. military found that repealing the ban had no negative impact on military readiness, effectiveness, or unit cohesion, despite worries to the contrary. At least 32,837 service members were discharged from the military due to their sexual orientation since 1980, according to DOD data.

ICE has been invading U.S. cities, targeting, surveilling, harassing, assaulting, detaining, and torturing people who are undocumented immigrants. They also have targeted people with work permits, asylum seekers, permanent residents (people holding “green cards”), naturalized citizens, and even citizens by birth. ICE has spent hundreds of millions of dollars on surveillance technology to spy on anyone—and potentially everyone—in the United States. It can be hard to imagine how to defend oneself against such an overwhelming force. But a few enterprising hackers have started projects to do counter surveillance against ICE, and hopefully protect their communities through clever use of technology.
Let’s start with Flock, the company behind a number of automated license plate reader (ALPR) and other camera technologies. You might be surprised at how many Flock cameras there are in your community. Many large and small municipalities around the country have signed deals with Flock for license plate readers to track the movement of all cars in their city. Even though these deals are signed by local police departments, oftentimes ICE also gains access.
Because of their ubiquity, people are interested in finding out where and how many Flock cameras are in their community. One project that can help with this is the OUI-SPY, a small piece of open source hardware. The OUI-SPY runs on a cheap Arduino compatible chip called an ESP-32. There are multiple programs available for loading on the chip, such as “Flock You,” which allows people to detect Flock cameras and “Sky-Spy” to detect overhead drones. There’s also “BLE Detect,” which detects various Bluetooth signals including ones from Axon, Meta’s Ray-Bans that secretly record you, and more. It also has a mode commonly known as “fox hunting” to track down a specific device. Activists and researchers can use this tool to map out different technologies and quantify the spread of surveillance.
There’s also the open source Wigle app which is primarily designed for mapping out Wi-Fi, but also has the ability to make an audio alert when a specific Wi-Fi or Bluetooth identifier is detected. This means you can set it up to get a notification when it detects products from Flock, Axon, or other nasties in their vicinity.
One enterprising YouTuber, Benn Jordan, figured out a way to fool Flock cameras into not recording his license plate simply by painting some minor visual noise on his license plate. This is innocuous enough that any human will still be able to read his license plate, but it completely prevented Flock devices from recognizing his license plate as a license plate at the time. Some states have outlawed drivers obscuring their license plates, so taking such action is not recommended.
Jordan later went on to discover hundreds of misconfigured Flock cameras that were exposing their administrator interface without a password on the public internet. This would allow anyone with an internet connection to view a live surveillance feed, download 30 days of video, view logs, and more. The cameras pointed at parks, public trails, busy intersections, and even a playground. This was a massive breach of public trust and a huge mistake for a company that claims to be working for public safety.
Other hackers have taken on the task of open-source intelligence and community reporting. One interesting example is deflock.me and alpr.watch, which are crowdsourced maps of ALPR cameras. Much like the OUI-SPY project, this allows activists to map out and expose Flock surveillance cameras in their community.
There have also been several ICE reporting apps released, including apps to report ICE sightings in your area such Stop ICE Alerts, ICEOUT.org, and ICE Block. ICEBlock was delisted by Apple at the request of Attorney General Pam Bondi, a fact we are suing over. There is also Eyes Up, an app to securely record and archive ICE raids, which was taken down by Apple earlier this year.
Another interesting project documenting ICE and creating a trove of open-source intelligence is ICE List Wiki which contains info on companies that have contracts with ICE, incidents and encounters with ICE, and vehicles ICE uses.
People without programming knowledge can also get involved. In Chicago, people used whistles to warn their neighbors that ICE was present or in the area. Many people 3D-printed whistles along with instructional booklets to hand out to their communities, allowing a wider distribution of whistles and consequently earlier warnings for their neighbors.
Many hackers have started hosting digital security trainings for their communities or building web sites with security advice, including how to remove your data from the watchful eyes of the surveillance industry. To reach a broader community, trainers have even started hosting trainings on how to defend their communities and what to do in an ICE raid in video games, such as Fortnight.
There is also EFF’s own Rayhunter project for detecting cell-site simulators, about which we have written extensively. Rayhunter runs on a cheap mobile hotspot and doesn’t require deep technical knowledge to use.
It’s important to remember that we are not powerless. Even in the face of a domestic law enforcement presence with massive surveillance capabilities and military-esque technologies, there are still ways to engage in surveillance self-defense. We cannot give into nihilism and fear. We must continue to find small ways to protect ourselves and our communities, and when we can, fight back.

[Tony Goacher] was approached by a local college, though, which had a problem with this technology. Namely, that students were using them and leaving them filthy. They posed a simple question—could these bikes become something else?
[Tony’s] solution was simple—the bikes would be turned into game controllers. This was easily achieved by fitting a bi-color disc into the blender assembly. As the wheel on the bike turns, it spins up the blender, with the disc inside. An ESP32 microcontroller paired with a light sensor is then able to count pulses as the disc spins, getting a readout of the blender’s current RPM. Working backwards, this can then be calculated out into the bike’s simulated road speed and used to play a basic game on an attached Raspberry Pi. Notably, the rig is setup such that the Raspberry Pi and one bike connect to an access point hosted by the other bike. This is helpful, because it means neither bike has too many dangling cables that could get caught up in a wheel or chain.

After crash-landing on a deserted planetoid deep in uncharted space, your job is to keep your crew of four distinct explorers alive long enough to figure a way back home. Adaptory combines deep physics-based simulation with base building and discovery. As your team digs below the surface, relationships develop, challenges appear, and rebuilding the ship might eventually take a backseat to unraveling the mysteries of this seemingly dead rock.
Each crew member is a distinct individual, generated procedurally at the start of each game. Your goal is to keep them alive: breathing, fed, warm, healthy, and happy. Each explorer has their own set of skills, traits, and opinions they will not hesitate to share with other crew members. Their conversations and diaries are an integral part of the story and the gameplay, helping you figure out how to best utilize their skills in a challenging environment.
The crashed ship provides shelter and will keep your crew alive for a time. But to survive, you’ll have to build a proper base and form a resilient community capable of facing any dangers. Your crew needs somewhere to sleep, eat, wash, heal, and hang out to keep morale up. Manage temperature, connections, plumbing – and that’s just the beginning. Complexity grows over time. Eventually, you’ll have to automate the base, because while it grows, and so does your list of tasks, your crew size does not.
Adaptory runs on sophisticated physics and chemistry systems, simulating gravity, temperature, density, viscosity, and even phase transitions with nearly fifty different materials to learn about and experiment with. Leverage them for your benefit. Need power? Set up a solar panel array to capture sunlight. Or power generators by boiling water with molten rock to generate steam or funnel natural gases to a turbine. But remember: each game is a completely new, procedurally generated experience with unique challenges.

However, when you get into scientific and graphical calculators, the feature sets get a lot more interesting. For example, [Ready? Z80] has this excellent explainer on how HP’s older calculators handle infrared communications.
The video focuses on the HP 27S Scientific Calculator, which [Ready? Z80] found in an op-shop for just $5. Introduced in 1988, the HP-27S had the ability to dump screen data over an infrared link to a thermal printer to produce paper records of mundane high-school calculations or important engineering math. In the video, [Ready? Z80] explains the communication method with the aid of Hewlett-Packard’s own journal publication from October 1987, which lays out of the details of “the REDEYE Protocol.” Edgy stuff. It’s pretty straightforward to understand, with the calculator sending out bursts of data in six to eight pulses at a time, modulated onto a 32.768KHz square wave as is the norm. [Ready? Z80] then goes a step further, whipping up custom hardware to receive the signal and display the resulting data on a serial terminal. This is achieved with a TEC-1G single-board computer, based on the Z80 CPU, because that’s how [Ready? Z80] does things.
