Funniest/Most Insightful Comments Of The Week At Techdirt

Par : Leigh Beadon
25 janvier 2026 à 20:45

This week, our first place winner on the insightful side is Stephen T. Stone with a comment about the idea from DHS that it’s un-American to refuse to house federal officers:

Except for the fact that we literally have an amendment in our constitution that says nobody has to house soldiers. These people really are just the dumbest fucking fascists, aren’t they.

In second place, it’s Thad with a comment about ICE’s supposed incompetence:

You know as well as I do that this isn’t about immigration, it’s about white supremacy.

These aren’t stupid mistakes; ICE is doing exactly what it’s there to do.

For editor’s choice on the insightful side, we start out with one more comment from Thad, this time about MAGA as a continuation, not an aberration:

MAGA is where the Republican Party has been headed since the Southern Strategy. They just don’t have to hide it anymore.

Trump didn’t make the GOP fascist. He’s a terrifying symptom but he’s not the cause.

Just shy of half the people who voted in the last election voted for this. The ones who insist that this isn’t what they voted for are ignorant, lying, or both.

Next, it’s PB&J with a comment about Trump’s deranged obsession with Greenland:

Me: Did you see the batshit insane thing he wrote this morning?

Wife: You’re gonna have to be more specific.

… that’s just life in the USA in 2026.

Over on the funny side, our first place winner is Thad yet again, this time with a comment on our post asking if you can trust Mark Meador:

Let’s ask Ian Betteridge.

In second place, it’s David with a comment about plans for martial law:

Well, considering where the Arctic Angels are stationed and considering we are talking about Hegseth, he probably has a surprise attack on Russia’s strategic Vodka reserves in planning.

For editor’s choice on the funny side, we start out with an anonymous comment about banning social media for kids:

Is it going to be considered censorship of conservative voices when they start blocking people who read and write at a 3rd grade level?

Finally, it’s Berenerd with a comment on last week’s comments post, regarding one of the winners:

I feel Mr Wilson did a better job at redacting than the Trump administration did.

That’s all for this week, folks!

spreadsheets + vi + json

25 janvier 2026 à 21:39

Hi lobste.rs! I'd like to share a proof of concept for an idea I've thought about for a long time. Think of a new form of spreadsheets where the primary data structure is not a rigid grid but a free-form JSON-like structure (but with first class tables support of course). I'm linking here a demo which uses vi style hotkeys for interaction, although of course the idea is not limited to that mode of interaction.

The addresses end up being JSON paths. The layout is currently rigid because it's just a PoC but ideally you'd have much more control over it, kind of like a canvas.

Expressions can refer to other cells via their JSON based address, even relative to their current address. There is no expressions support in the PoC yet but a table in the example does show a dynamic column. Since you have arbitrarily nested arrays/hashes anyway, you can reserve tables to represent arrays of homogenous records, and some of the columns can be dynamically calculated (or have a default dynamic calculation) based on other columns. The expressions are just JavaScript functions, but they can be anything that works with JSON types.

This is very far from finished. I'm just been trying to share early these days and I think many of you'd find the idea itself interesting.

Why? I think spreadsheets are great but they are underutilized because of their rigidity. They are not suitable for version control, being authoritative data sources, powering APIs etc. I don't know if this is the right direction either. I'd be happy to hear your thoughts!

The code is 100% manually written by me (except for the CSS background which I copied from SO). If there is sufficient interest in collaboration, I'd be happy to put up the source on codeberg.

Trump kicked her out of the Space Force. Now she’s fighting back with a congressional run.

Bree Fram, the 23-year veteran who was forcibly separated from the military in December following the Trump administration’s purge of transgender service members, announced on Tuesday that she’ll be a candidate for the 11th District Congressional seat in Northern Virginia.

Fram was the highest-ranking trans service member when she was promoted to the rank of colonel in 2024.

Purged trans Space Force colonel says she’ll keep fighting for democracy out of uniform

“Too many Americans are afraid of what their own government is doing to them, instead of confident it’s working for them. That’s why I’m running for Congress,” the candidate, age 46, said in her announcement.

“I will fight to make our Virginia communities more affordable, protect our rights, and build a government that actually works for you. I intend to deliver an accessible, inclusive American Dream, ensuring that Virginia remains diverse, safe and economically vibrant for all,” she added.

Fram shared in June that she had been placed on administrative leave from the Space Force pending separation under the Defense Department’s new transgender ban, the second instituted by Trump in his two presidential terms.

She said she knew it was coming.

“It was like watching a hurricane form from far offshore, and you’re just wondering where exactly is it going to hit, how intense is it going to be,” she told WUSA after her announcement on Tuesday.

In March, Fram publicly criticized the ban in an interview with The New York Times, predicting the devastating toll on trans service members and the military, and making a pledge to “try and help thousands of other transgender service members navigate this incredibly complex and trying time that we’re living in.”

This week, Fram said that Trump’s executive order vilifies trans service members as “dishonorable, undisciplined liars who lacked the humility required for military service.”

“It was terrifying because I knew that there were thousands and thousands of trans people at that moment serving, doing their battlefield mission all around the world and here at home to keep Americans safe,” she said. “To have that come from this president to tell you you are not worthy of being on this team was devastating.”

“My experience of being pushed out is driving me to fight for an America that protects everyone’s dignity,” she said. “Every child out there should know that they are safe, seen, and celebrated.”

Fram remains subject to the Uniform Code of Military Justice in retirement, she said, and acknowledged the Trump administration could bring charges against her for speaking out, as the Defense Department has with current members of Congress who served in the military and have criticized the administration publicly.

“Could I be brought up on charges that are absolutely made up and false? Absolutely,” Fram said. “Is that a concern? Yes. Will it stop me? No. This administration needs to be stood up to and called out at every moment that it lies and abuses its power.”

Hackaday Links: January 25, 2026

If predictions hold steady, nearly half of the United States will be covered in snow by the time this post goes live, with the Northeast potentially getting buried under more than 18 inches. According to the National Weather Service, the “unusually expansive and long-duration winter storm will bring heavy snow from the central U.S. across the Midwest, Ohio Valley, and through the northeastern U.S. for the remainder of the weekend into Monday.” If that sounds like a fun snow day, they go on to clarify that “crippling to locally catastrophic impacts can be expected”, so keep that in mind. Hopefully you didn’t have any travel plans, as CNBC reported that more than 13,000 flights were canceled as of Friday night. If you’re looking to keep up with the latest developments, we recently came across StormWatch (GitHub repo), a slick open source weather dashboard that’s written entirely in HTML. Stay safe out there, hackers.

Speaking of travel, did you hear about Sebastian Heyneman’s Bogus Journey to Davos? The entrepreneur (or “Tech Bro” to use the parlance of our times) was in town to woo investors attending the World Economic Forum, but ended up spending the night in a Swiss jail cell because the authorities thought he might be a spy. Apparently he had brought along a prototype for the anti-fraud device he was hawking, and mistakenly left it laying on a table while he was rubbing shoulders. It was picked up by security guards and found to contain a very spooky ESP32 development board, so naturally he was whisked off for interrogation. A search of his hotel room uncovered more suspicious equipment, including an electric screwdriver and a soldering iron. Imagine if a child had gotten their hands on them?

But the best part of the story is when Sebastian tries to explain the gadget’s function to investigators. When asked to prove that the code on the microcontroller wasn’t malicious, he was at a loss — turns out our hero used AI to create the whole thing and wasn’t even familiar with the language it was written in. In his own words: “Look, I’m not a very good hardware engineer, but I’m a great user of AI. I was one of the top users of Cursor last year. I did 43,000 agent runs and generated 25 billion tokens.” Oof. Luckily, the Swiss brought in a tech expert who quickly determined the device wasn’t dangerous. He was even nice enough to explain the code line-by-line to Sebastian before he was released. No word on whether or not they charged him for the impromptu programming lesson.

It wasn’t hard for the Swiss authorities to see what was inside the literal black box Sebastian brought with him, but what if that wasn’t possible? Well, if you’ve got an x-ray machine handy, that could certainly help. The folks at Eclypsium recently released a blog post that describes how they compared a legit FTDI cable with a suspect knock-off by peering at their innards. What we thought was particularly interesting was how they were able to correctly guess which one was the real deal based on the PCB design. The legitimate adapter featured things like ground pours and decoupling caps, and the cheap one…didn’t. Of course, this makes sense. If you’re looking to crank something out as cheaply as possible, those would be the first features to go. (Editor’s note: sarcasm.)

It doesn’t take an x-ray machine or any other fancy equipment to figure out that the Raspberry Pi 5 is faster than its predecessors. But quantifying just how much better each generation of Pi is compared to the other members of the family does require a bit more effort, which is why we were glad to see that The DIY Life did the homework for us. It’s not much of a spoiler to reveal that the Pi 5 won the head-to-head competition in essentially every category, but it’s still interesting to read along to see how each generation of hardware fared in the testing.

Finally, Albedo has released a fascinating write-up that goes over the recent flight of their Very Low Earth Orbit (VLEO) satellite, Clarity-1. As we explained earlier this week, operating at a lower orbit offers several tangible benefits to spacecraft. One of the major ones is that such an orbit decays quickly, meaning a spacecraft could burn up just months or even days after its mission is completed. For Albedo specifically, they’re taking advantage of the lower altitude to snap closeup shots of the Earth. While there were a few hiccups, the mission was overall a success, providing another example of how commercial operators can capitalize on this unique space environment.

See something interesting that you think would be a good fit for our weekly Links column? Drop us a line, we’ve love to hear about it.

zerobrew is a Rust-based, 5-20x faster drop-in Homebrew alternative

26 janvier 2026 à 01:43

zerobrew takes a lot of ideas from uv - packages live in a content-addressable store (by sha256), so reinstalls are instant. Downloads, extraction, and linking run in parallel with aggressive HTTP caching. It pulls from Homebrew's CDN, so you can swap brew for zb with your existing commands. This leads to dramatic speedups, up to 5x cold and 20x warm!
