Gay lawyer who thinks trans rights are “homophobic” says Letitia James fired her for her views

The now-former Assistant Attorney General at New York’s Consumer Frauds and Protection Bureau has lashed out at pro-transgender New York State Attorney General Letitia James for allegedly firing her because she opposes gender-affirming health care for trans youth.

In an almost 500-word rant on social media, lesbian Glenna Goldis blasted James for supporting trans youth and claimed James’s officials treated her “like a pest.”

“I was an attorney in NYAG’s consumer frauds bureau, which did not work on anything related to PGM [pediatric gender medicine],” she wrote. “Since 2024 I’d been raising the alarm publicly and within NYAG that PGM providers may be engaged in a dangerous consumer fraud…. These attorneys struggled to explain why my public statements were problematic, apparently because they weren’t engaging with the issue.”

She said the general counsel eventually identified that her agreement with the Supreme Court’s U.S. v. Skrmetti decision – which upheld a Tennessee law banning gender-affirming care for trans youth – was problematic because it “contradicted James’s legal position.”

“NYAG’s ethics chief warned me it was unethical to ‘take public legal positions that conflict with’ James’s,” she claimed. “The Rule of Professional Conduct that he cited said no such thing. It seemed he was trying to protect James by cowing me into silence.”

She then accused James of not championing LGBTQ+ people and claimed gender-affirming care is “homophobic.”

“I tried to explain to NYAG officials that PGM, by its nature, targets children who defy sexed norms — whom studies show are more likely to be gay when they grow up.” She did not cite the studies she was referring to.

In reality, a 2022 study out of the Netherlands found that an overwhelming majority of trans people who began gender-affirming medical treatments as teenagers continue those treatments as young adults.

“If Letitia James actually cared about ‘LGBTQ’ youth,” Goldis wrote, inexplicably putting LGBTQ in quotation marks, “then she’d research ‘gender’ drugs and learn what they do. Instead she glibly calls the drugs ‘safe’ and fires me for contradicting her.”

Goldis claimed gender-affirming care causes “sexual dysfunction, chronic genital pain, and incontinence, among all sorts of other side effects,” despite the fact that the treatments used have been proven effective, safe, and in many cases, reversible.

In fact, hormone therapy is used routinely on cisgender children for a variety of reasons, and anti-trans folks are not campaigning to stop using the allegedly “harmful” drugs on them.

Dr. Kareen Matouk, a clinical psychologist in the gender identity program at Columbia University Irving Medical Center, told Self magazine in 2023, “We have some data suggesting that gender-affirming hormone therapy is generally safe and effective under the supervision of an endocrinologist or medical provider who specializes in transgender health care and has experience initiating hormone therapy.”

Gender-affirming care for both adolescents and adults has been endorsed by the American Medical Association, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Psychiatric Association, and many other professional groups as necessary and frequently lifesaving for transgender individuals.

Study after study has also shown that gender-affirming care is critical to improving trans people’s mental health.

“James’s behavior toward me illustrates why the public discussion of PGM is often one-sided in places like NYC — and so strikingly different from what you hear behind closed doors,” Goldis claimed. “James was wrong to treat me like a pest. I was trying to warn her about red flags for fraud that I saw around PGM — that’s what she hired me to do.”

“In the end NYAG accused me of engaging in ‘disruptive public speech.’ Unfortunately, that’s not true. I haven’t disrupted the Democratic elite’s zombie-like devotion to PGM providers.”

She then warned, “But I’m just getting started.”

Goldis has been very outspoken against not only gender-affirming care but also trans identities in general. She has appeared on podcasts and spoken at events where she misgenders trans children. One podcast called her “the lawyer dismantling the gender medicine empire.” She appeared on another to discuss her question, “Why are therapists transing away the gay?”

During that podcast, she referred to trans people as “so-called transgender and non-conforming people” and said psychologists are manipulating gay people into believing they’re actually trans due to American Psychological Association guidelines that encourage affirmative care. “It’s blatant homophobia telling psychologists to transition their gay patients,” she said.

In one 2025 speech, she decried policies requiring students’ pronouns be respected and said, “I believe that American public school kids do have the freedom to call a boy a boy.”

James’s office confirmed to the New York Post that Goldis had been fired, saying, “The Office of the Attorney General has rules and protocols for employees who engage in activities that can impact the work, operations, or integrity of the office.”

It continued, “This former employee’s flagrant and repeated disregard of these rules and protocols disrupted and undermined our efforts to protect the rights of all New Yorkers.”

Goldis also spoke with the Post. She said she was “trying to have substantive conversations” with James’s office about how gender-affirming care is “a fraud” or “potentially a fraud.”

She also said she is “in contact with First Amendment experts to advise” on whether her constitutional rights were violated with her firing.

James has consistently proven herself a staunch defender of LGBTQ+ rights in recent years. In 2021, she cheered a federal judge’s decision to dismiss a lawsuit brought by a photographer seeking a religious exemption to New York’s anti-discrimination law in order to deny services to same-sex couples.

In March 2023, amid a wave of anti-LGBTQ+ protests at all-ages Pride events and drag performances, James hosted a Drag Story Hour at Manhattan’s LGBTQ Center. After anti-LGBTQ+ protesters, including members of the Proud Boys, clashed with supporters outside the event, James’s office released a statement saying that part of the point of the Drag Story Hour was to “condemn hate and combat rampant disinformation.”

Last year, she released a letter informing healthcare providers that halting gender-affirming care for minors remains a violation of state law despite a presidential executive order seeking to ban gender-affirming care for anyone under 19.

She has also been engaged in various legal battles to defend trans rights, including challenging a 2024 Nassau County executive order barring trans girls from participating in girls’ sports in Nassau facilities.

“The law is perfectly clear: You cannot discriminate against a person because of their gender identity or expression. We have no room for hate or bigotry in New York,” James said in March. “This executive order is transphobic and blatantly illegal. Nassau County must immediately rescind the order, or we will not hesitate to take decisive legal action.”
