Pam Bondi rages at Democrats for asking about Epstein files instead of talking about stocks

Attorney General Pam Bondi is getting attention online for her bizarre way of dodging questions at a House Judiciary Committee hearing yesterday.

At the hearing, which was ostensibly for the House to provide oversight of the Department of Justice, Bondi raged at Democrats for wanting to talk about convicted child sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein and his alleged associates who are now a part of the Trump administration, like Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, who visited Epstein’s island in the Caribbean, according to recently released documents.

Sometimes she would answer questions about Epstein with non sequiturs to show Congress what she thought they should discuss.

One particular exchange stood out. Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) asked Bondi about the lack of indictments of potential Epstein co-conspirators, citing “concrete evidence of disgusting criminality revealed in the Epstein files,” and Bondi started quoting stock prices.

“The Dow is over 50,000,” she shouted. “I don’t know why you’re laughing! You’re a great stock trader, Raskin.”

“The Dow is over 50,000 right now. The S&P at almost 7,000, and the Nasdaq smashing records. American 401(k)s and retirement savings are booming. That’s what we should be talking about.”

“What does the Dow have to do with anything?” she continued, still dodging the question about Epstein. “That’s what they just asked. Are you kidding?”

Bondi crashes out over Epstein: "The Dow is over 50,000 dollars! I don't know why you're laughing. You're a great stock trader as I hear, Raskin. The Dow is over 50,000 right now. The S&P at almost 7,000, and the Nasdaq smashing records. That's what we should be talking about."

People have been critical of Bondi’s response.

Because Pam Bondi is the most corrupt and depraved Attorney General in American history, she doesn't seem to care that it's her job to bring rapists of girls and young women to justice–not be a cheerleader for the fucking Stock Market.

Publicly funded gender-affirming care is great for the economy, says new study

Publicly funded, appropriate gender-affirming care for transgender people could actually save millions for taxpayers and boost the economy, according to a new study.

Analysis from researchers in Australia found that vastly improving the accessibility of gender-affirming treatment through public funding would likely reduce financial pressures caused by psychological distress.

According to the data, trans Australians who haven’t started hormone therapy are 3.2-7 times more likely to access mental health services for issues such as gender dysphoria.

On average, unmedicated trans people use between 1.6 and 3.6 mental health services, including GP mental health plans or psychologist visits, each year. In comparison, the average Australian uses one service every two years.

However, after starting hormone therapy, the same population used between 0.3 and 2.6 fewer mental health services on average.

The study’s authors used these findings, as well as anonymous Medicare records on gender-affirming treatments between 2021-2024, to estimate the average financial burden on taxpayers caused by routine usage of mental health services.

The records suggest that, during that period, over 20,300 people aged 15+ started feminising hormones, over 11,800 started masculinising hormones, 2,872 adults underwent top surgery, while 826 underwent gender confirmation surgery.

Using the standard $100 cost for psychologist visits compared to gender-affirming treatment costs, they discovered the government was spending anywhere between $30-260 less per person after starting hormones.

This translated to gender-affirming surgeries, too. The government reportedly spends over $1,700 less on mental health coverage for trans patients after they had top surgery. For gender confirmation surgeries, it was saving around $3,416 per person over the following five years.

If the government increased gender-affirming surgery funding alone, its public health service Medicare would save a whopping $42 million over five years. Authors noted that the number is likely much higher because of the “significant unmet need” for gender-affirming care.

The report stipulated that, if the government paid $1,328 per person for 89 per cent of the patients receiving top surgery, the total cost would be around $14 million. Subtracting the $18.7 million it takes to fund the same patients’ use of mental health services, Medicare would save $4.6 million over the following five years.

It would also save over $37 million in taxpayer’s money by increasing funding for gender confirmation surgery, which costs an average of $19.9 million compared to the $57 million for mental health services.

This isn’t even counting hormone treatments, which are similarly cost-effective. Authors wrote that, in some cases, the money spent in mental health care and in others it leads to savings.

Not only would the move be economically sound, it would also vastly improve the quality of life for trans people across the country by hugely reducing dysphoria-related distress, according to the study’s findings.

Kick It Out and Football v Homophobia launch new reporting relationship over anti-LGBTQ+ hate

Kick It Out and Football v Homophobia have announced a new reporting relationship, aimed at tackling the rise of anti-LGBTQ+ abuse in football.

The collaboration between the two organisations will see Kick It Out’s dedicated reporting team handle reports from both organisations whilst Football v Homophobia will source support for victims through its network.

Launched during Football v Homophobia’s Month of Action, the new relationship comes after a record number of reports of anti-LGBTQ+ abuse have been made to Kick It Out. With more than five months of the current season remaining, there have already been 139 reported incidents across professional football, grassroots football and online – already matching last year’s figures.

Previous data collected by Kick It Out, from reports made directly to the organisation, showed during the 2024/25 football season there a total of 1,398 incidents of abuse with a sharp rise in sexism, transphobia and faith-based abuse.

These findings echo those outlined in Home Office data from the same season, which also revealed there was a rise in the number of Premier League and EFL matches where anti-LGBTQ incidents were reported.

Such incidents of homophobic abuse were recorded at 49 out of a total of 380 Premier League matches, according to the government data, representing an increase on the season before.

Matches involving south coast club Brighton and London squad Chelsea were the most likely to be impacted, with 17 and 16 incidents respectively.

Incidents involving Chelsea often relate to the infamous ‘Chelsea rent boy’ chant, a demeaning phrase which has homophobic connotations due to Chelsea’s queer history.

A ‘rent boy’ is phrase used to describe a young male prostitute – specifically, a male prostitute who sells sex to other men.

The term has been directed at Chelsea players and fans rather than other football teams because of the London borough of Chelsea’s past status as an LGBTQ+ hotspot.

Across the board, the Home Office data also showed all 20 Premier League teams had at least one match during the course of the season where a homophobic incident was recorded.

Chris Paouros, Kick It Out vice-chair, said: “The rise in reports of homophobia to us this season shows that despite progress, football must take stronger action so that LGBTQ+ communities feel a real sense of belonging and respect across the game.

“That comes from celebrating the community, increasing education, encouraging reporting and ensuring that greater accountability follows when incidents occur.

“Even though the homophobic chant related to Chelsea Football Club is now a criminal offence, we still receive reports of it being sung, and this season, homophobic abuse at grassroots level has increased sharply compared to last season.

“We’re pleased to enhance our relationship with Football v Homophobia to back the LGBTQ+ community, and believe this arrangement will help advocate for a game where everyone stands up to discrimination.”

Lou Englefield, of Football v Homophobia, said: “While there has already been a large increase in reports of anti-LGBTQ+ language and behaviour in football to Kick It Out so far this season, it’s important to note that incidents of homophobia and transphobia tend to go unreported, according to UK government research.

“A 2024 survey of fans who watch men’s football and who are LGBTQ+ reflected a desire for homophobia to be tackled more seriously.

“However, less than a quarter of fans who said they had experienced or witnessed this type of discrimination went on to report those incidents.

“Through this new relationship, FvH hopes to build greater confidence in the reporting process for all those who are impacted by LGBTQ+-phobia, not just people who are lesbian, gay, bi and trans.”

LEDs Enter the Nanoscale

MicroLEDs, with pixels just micrometers across, have long been a byword in the display world. Now, microLED-makers have begun shrinking their creations into the uncharted nano realm. In January, a startup named Polar Light Technologies unveiled prototype blue LEDs less than 500 nanometers across. This raises a tempting question: How far can LEDs shrink?

We know the answer is, at least, considerably smaller. In the past year, two different research groups have demonstrated LED pixels at sizes of 100 nm or less.

These are some of the smallest LEDs ever created. They leave much to be desired in their efficiency—but one day, nanoLEDs could power ultra-high-resolution virtual reality displays and high-bandwidth on-chip photonics. And the key to making even tinier LEDs, if these early attempts are any precedents, may be to make more unusual LEDs.

New Approaches to LED

Take Polar Light’s example. Like many LEDs, the Sweden-based startup’s diodes are fashioned from III-V semiconductors like gallium nitride (GaN) and indium gallium nitride (InGaN). Unlike many LEDs, which are etched into their semiconductor from the top down, Polar Light’s are instead fabricated by building peculiarly shaped hexagonal pyramids from the bottom up.

Polar Light designed its pyramids for the larger microLED market, and plans to start commercial production in late 2026. But they also wanted to test how small their pyramids could shrink. So far, they’ve made pyramids 300 nm across. “We haven’t reached the limit, yet,” says Oskar Fajerson, Polar Light’s CEO. “Do we know the limit? No, we don’t, but we can [make] them smaller.”

Elsewhere, researchers have already done that. Some of the world’s tiniest LEDs come from groups who have foregone the standard III-V semiconductors in favor of other types of LEDs—like OLEDs.

“We are thinking of a different pathway for organic semiconductors,” says Chih-Jen Shih, a chemical engineer at ETH Zurich in Switzerland. Shih and his colleagues were interested in finding a way to fabricate small OLEDs at scale. Using an electron-beam lithography-based technique, they crafted arrays of green OLEDs with pixels as small as 100 nm across.

Where today’s best displays have 14,000 pixels per inch, these nanoLEDs—presented in an October 2025 Nature Photonics paper—can reach 100,000 pixels per inch.

Another group tried their hands with perovskites, cage-shaped materials best-known for their prowess in high-efficiency solar panels. Perovskites have recently gained traction in LEDs too. “We wanted to see what would happen if we make perovskite LEDs smaller, all the way down to the micrometer and nanometer length-scale,” says Dawei Di, engineer at Zhejiang University in Hangzhou, China.

Di’s group started with comparatively colossal perovskite LED pixels, measuring hundreds of micrometers. Then, they fabricated sequences of smaller and smaller pixels, each tinier than the last. Even after the 1 μm mark, they did not stop: 890 nm, then 440 nm, only bottoming out at 90 nm. These 90 nm red and green pixels, presented in a March 2025 Nature paper, likely represent the smallest LEDs reported to date.

Efficiency Challenges

Unfortunately, small size comes at a cost: Shrinking LEDs also shrinks their efficiency. Di’s group’s perovskite nanoLEDs have external quantum efficiencies—a measure of how many injected electrons are converted into photons—around 5 to 10 percent; Shih’s group’s nano-OLED arrays performed slightly better, topping 13 percent. For comparison, a typical millimeter-sized III-V LED can reach 50 to 70 percent, depending on its color.

Shih, however, is optimistic that modifying how nano-OLEDs are made can boost their efficiency. “In principle, you can achieve 30 percent, 40 percent external quantum efficiency with OLEDs, even with a smaller pixel, but it takes time to optimize the process,” Shih says.

Di thinks that researchers could take perovskite nanoLEDs to less dire efficiencies by tinkering with the material. Although his group is now focusing on the larger perovskite microLEDs, Di expects researchers will eventually reckon with nanoLEDs’ efficiency gap. If applications of smaller LEDs become appealing, “this issue could become increasingly important,” Di says.

What Can NanoLEDs Be Used For?

What can you actually do with LEDs this small? Today, the push for tinier pixels largely comes from devices like smart glasses and virtual reality headsets. Makers of these displays are hungry for smaller and smaller pixels in a chase for bleeding-edge picture quality with low power consumption (one reason that efficiency is important). Polar Light’s Fajerson says that smart-glass manufacturers today are already seeking 3 μm pixels.

But researchers are skeptical that VR displays will ever need pixels smaller than around 1 μm. Shrink pixels too far beyond that, and they’ll cross their light’s diffraction limit—that means they’ll become too small for the human eye to resolve. Shih’s and Di’s groups have already crossed the limit with their 100-nm and 90-nm pixels.

Very tiny LEDs may instead find use in on-chip photonics systems, allowing the likes of AI data centers to communicate with greater bandwidths than they can today. Chip manufacturing giant TSMC is already trying out microLED interconnects, and it’s easy to imagine chipmakers turning to even smaller LEDs in the future.

But the tiniest nanoLEDs may have even more exotic applications, because they’re smaller than the wavelengths of their light. “From a process point of view, you are making a new component that was not possible in the past,” Shih says.

For example, Shih’s group showed their nano-OLEDs could form a metasurface—a structure that uses its pixels’ nano-sizes to control how each pixel interacts with its neighbors. One day, similar devices could focus nanoLED light into laser-like beams or create holographic 3D nanoLED displays.

‘It made me defend my existence’: The queer pop star taking on Turkey’s LGBTQ+ censorship

Mabel Matiz’s laughter lines crease as he thinks about the previous evening. The 40-year-old musician, known as one of Turkey’s biggest pop stars, performed to thousands in the country’s capital Ankara.

Being on stage at all is “like a miracle”, he says, considering how debilitatingly shy he was as a child growing up in Mersin, on Turkey’s south coast. Now, 15 years after the release of his eponymous debut record, being on stage has become “more playful, more free and more nourishing”.

The near two billion Spotify streams and five million monthly listeners are probably natural confidence builders. “I feel so happy to be on stage, to show my authentic self to people,” he says. “I know it will be a reflection for people and the audience usually feel happy to see [themselves in] my reflection. It’s like a conversation.”

The Ankara gig was a good show, he says, with a good audience. “I was also good,” he adds. “But sometimes it depends. Some shows are better, some shows you feel more emotional. And last night was a little bit emotional maybe.”

It’s understandable. The past five months have been a maelstrom of bogus controversy for the singer-songwriter. We’re speaking over Zoom, Mabel from Istanbul, to discuss the musician’s upcoming show at London’s Royal Festival Hall. It’s his third ever performance in the capital – he sold out the Barbican in 2022 and 2024 – and he’s “excited”. His live show, which features his now signature fusion of band-backed traditional Anatolian folk and playful, experimental electronica, is being reworked with new musical arrangements for the first time. “So actually, on my mind always, London is spinning,” he laughs, flashing perfect pearly whites.

Yet the past few months have been unavoidably heavy. “Where can I start from?” Matiz smiles wryly when I broach the subject. In early September, he teamed up with French electronic duo Ko Shin Moon on song “Perperişan”, a woozy Turkish pop song which he has described as telling “a love story through metaphors”. Matiz is gay, and the “passionate and intense” lyrics use male pronouns. “I wish to be stripped bare and placed on a pillow with him,” one line goes.

Two weeks after its release, Turkish authorities launched a criminal case against Matiz over the song, claiming that its suggestive lyrics breached obscenity laws. In a first of its kind request, the Turkish Ministry of Family demanded the song be removed from streaming services, citing possible harm to “public order and general health”. Prosecutors are reportedly seeking a prison sentence of between six months and three years.

In a statement at the time, Mabel Matiz rebuked the charge, stating that lyrics had been deliberately twisted. “I want to believe that public order and our general well-being are not so fragile that they would be disrupted by a mere song,” he wrote on X, formerly Twitter. He appeared in court in January, where he was grilled on whether the song was directed at another man. “Anyone can sing a song for anyone. It’s not my place to draw those lines,” he reportedly responded. The trial was adjourned until 27 March.

Today, Matiz sounds only vaguely despondent and is instead sanguine and stoic. Admirably so. “I don’t want to exaggerate my situation,” he says. “Yes, this is my experience and I’m dealing with it [but] I’m feeling more powerful than a few months ago actually. It made me defend my existence and defend myself.”

Yes, he could never have anticipated such a jarring response from the authorities, but Matiz has dealt with outrange and censorship attempts before. In 2022, the music video for his song “Karakol” was promptly banned by Turkey’s media watchdog for featuring a same-sex love story (“It was so romantic and I’m still proud of that work,” he says now.) The following year, a planned concert of his in the city of Denizli was cancelled after he spoke out about LGBTQ+ rights.

There are numerous reasons for Matiz to remain upbeat. His fans are still showing up and his shows are still selling out. London is on the horizon. His manager, on our call too, says their legal team is feeling “positive” about the case because “factually it’s nonsense, basically”. Matiz is proud of the defence he put forward, and he refuses to be silenced.

“I’m always against censorship. I’m always against discrimination or hate speech or special behaviours against queer people,” he says. “So we don’t know [if] the case is really about the song or my persona that I reflect as a queer artist in a very mainstream way.” The furore rumbles on on social media, but so too does the overwhelming support he’s felt. “So as an experience I can say it’s really tiring and exhausting. But, you know, there are a lot of terrible stories happening all over the world.”

Homophobia isn’t, Matiz is keen to stress, only an issue in Turkey, yet the country has experienced an unavoidable rise in anti-LGBTQ+ hostility in recent years. Last year was dubbed the country’s ‘Year of the Family’ by president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, a campaign in favour of “traditional family values” which kickstarted with an attack on LGBTQ+ people. ILGA’s annual rainbow map revealed that in 2025, Turkey was the third worst European country in terms of LGBTQ+ rights. Pride festivals have been banned, while same-sex marriage and adoption remain illegal.

Matiz has been speaking and singing proudly about being part of the LGBTQ+ community since his early career, when his music was more progressive rock, and less of a streaming smash. Breaking into the mainstream with his 2018 art pop record Maya, named after his mother and inspired by time living in Berlin, didn’t change that.

“I love them and I see myself from my different ages on all of them,” he says of the LGBTQ+ fans he’s gathered through his defiance. “It makes me so sensitive and sentimental and also very responsible. I’m trying to be a good example; I’m trying to be an inspiring and liberating persona for myself and also for [them].”

Matiz is proud of his heritage. His visuals, as well as the music itself, are imbued with Turkish culture; the video for his 2018 song “A Canım” (66 million streams; 65 million views) is a distinctly vibrant celebration of the country. When he performs in Europe, it’s not just queer folk in the audience, but Turkish residents of those countries too.

“I always dreamed my music [would be] something that will make people come together from different walks of life because when people from different walks of life come together, I think it’s one of the biggest powers in the world,” he says, with real feeling. “Sometimes I’m still surprised when I see gay couples sitting with some old religious people and they’re all having fun and no one cares who somebody is… it means a lot to me.”

For now, Matiz remains in a tricky chapter of his career. It will hopefully close at the end of March. He’s already looking ahead to the next one. “This year, we have started a new project,” he teases. “The project will be an album in the next [few] months.” It’ll retain his usual blend of electronica and Turkish folk melodies, but with a dash of “‘70s psychedelic Anatolian band music” and some “new wave stuff”. After his show in London, he’s staying in the city to record some new songs. Is there anyone from London’s vast music scene he’s inspired by? “David Bowie always inspires me,” he says, with another broad, resilient smile.

Mabel Matiz performs at Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall on 13 February. Tickets are available now.

The Tumbler Ridge tragedy has fueled vile anti-trans hate. But trans shooters are extremely rare.

An 18-year-old trans woman has been identified by police as the suspected shooter responsible for nine deaths in the small Canadian town of Tumbler Ridge.

The tragedy has sparked an alarming wave of anti-trans rhetoric, with influential right-wing figures using it to spread dangerous misinformation on the prevalence of trans-perpetrated violence.

Suspect in Canada mass shooting identified as 18-year-old trans woman. Here’s what we know.

“This will just get uglier now for us and for our community as a whole, when our attention should be on the care of these victims and to support communities,” Marni Panas, an Edmonton-based trans activist, told the Canadian Broadcasting Company (CBC).

“We feel the same things,” she continued, adding that in addition to the agony she feels over what happened, she now must also deal with feeling less safe as a trans person. “We feel the sorrow, we feel the compassion, we feel the grief that all Canadians are for these families and these victims.”

Amelia Newbert, the co-executive director of Calgary-based LGBTQ+ advocacy group Skipping Stone, added that the politicization of the shooting is “only harming.”

“They’re only going to continue to inflict deeper wounds and deeper scars towards not just the trans community, but towards our country in general,” Newbert said.

James Densley, co-founder of The Violence Prevention Project, which tracks mass shootings in the United States, spoke with CBC about the extreme rarity of transgender mass shooters and how people often overassign significance to the unusual cases.

“When a shooter is transgender, that fact becomes the story, especially on social media,” Densley explained. “Whereas when the shooter is male, their identity is never really mentioned because it’s just unremarkable.”

“That creates an asymmetry in the coverage, where people will recall all the unusual cases because they were unusual.”

Densley shared Violence Prevention Project data, which has found that 97.5 percent of mass shootings are perpetrated by cisgender men, two percent by cisgender women, and only half a percent by trans people.

Another group that tracks U.S. mass shootings, the Gun Violence Archive, cites an even smaller percentage of trans mass shooters. The group found that of the 5,748 that took place between Jan. 1, 2013, and Sept. 15, 2025, only five perpetrators, less than one tenth of one percent, were confirmed to be trans.

But that hasn’t stopped the anti-trans hate machine from using the Tumbler Ridge tragedy to call for the eradication of trans people. Not only that, but folks on the right had decided the shooter was trans before police had even shared the identity of the suspected shooter.

Hours before the press conference in which Canadian police revealed the suspected shooter to be trans 18-year-old Jesse Van Rootselaar, far-right commentator Matt Walsh declared, with no evidence, that “trans people are the most dangerous and unstable group in existence and it’s not close.”

“The entire gender transition industry must be forcibly shut down immediately,” he wrote, stoking hatred among his four million followers on X. “Not just for the sake of the gender confused people it preys upon, but for the safety of the general public.”

The viciously anti-trans account Libs of TikTok, run by notorious stochastic terrorist and anti-LGBTQ+ internet troll Chaya Raichik, speculated about the shooter’s identity a full day before police revealed any information.

“Police in Canada are referring to the shooter as a ‘gunperson,'” Raichik wrote. “The shooter was also described as a ‘woman in a dress.’ Is everyone thinking what I’m thinking?”

Conservative influencer Nick Sortor echoed a similar sentiment. “Local police are referring to the shooter as a ‘gunperson.’ Yeah, we all know this is yet another trans mass shooter,” he posited.

Densley of the Violence Prevention Project said this kind of rhetoric is part of a “long and ugly history” of people scapegoating an entire marginalized group, despite the reality shown in the data.

“It happened with Muslim Americans after 9/11, for example. It’s happened with young Black men for decades, and now it seems to be happening with transgender people as well,” Densley said. “In some ways, the perceived pattern is speaking more to the politics of the moment than to any actual causal relationship.”

This phenomenon, he said, is called “base rate neglect.”

The Tumbler Ridge shooting took place on February 10th. One adult educator and five students aged 12-13 were found dead at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, police said. At least 25 others were injured. One 12-year-old student remains in critical condition.

Van Rootselaar’s mother and stepbrother were also found dead at the shooter’s family home. Both are believed to have been shot and killed by Van Rootselaar prior to her rampage at the school.

Van Rootselaar began her social transition six years ago, according to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). She was identified among the dead in the school’s library, where all but one of the victims at the school were shot and killed.

According to an RCMP spokesman, local police visited the suspected shooter’s home on several occasions over several years. The visits included mental health assessments under provisions in Canada’s Mental Health Act.

Firearms were also the subject of at least one call to the family’s home. A number of weapons were seized but later returned to the rightful owner, according to police.

The RCMP spokesman clarified that Van Rootselaar was assigned male at birth and was identified in early reports according to how she identified and presented. Soon after the shooting was called in at 1:20 p.m. Pacific Time on Tuesday, police put out an alert for a “female in a dress with brown hair.”

According to the spokesman, police discovered one deceased individual on a staircase and the rest of the dead, including Van Rootselaar, in the school library.

Police said they have not uncovered a note authored by the shooter, nor have they identified a motive.

The remote community of around 2,400 people lies 600 miles north of Vancouver near the Alberta border in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. The shooting in Tumbler Ridge is the third deadliest mass shooting in Canada, along with a 1996 shooting in Vernon, British Columbia, with an equal number of deaths.

Philippines Supreme Court makes landmark ruling for same-sex couples

The Supreme Court of the Philippines has ruled that same-sex couples who live together may be recognised as co-owners of property acquired during their relationship, provided there is clear proof of actual contribution.

In a decision put into effect on February 5 and penned by Associate Justice Jhosep Lopez, the Court clarified that because same-sex marriage is not yet legally recognised in the country, property relations between same-sex partners are governed by Article 148 of the Family Code.

Unlike Article 147, which presumes joint ownership for couples legally eligible to marry, Article 148 applies to couples prohibited from marriage and requires evidence of each partner’s financial or material contribution.

The case stemmed from a dispute between two women who purchased a house and lot in Quezon City during their relationship, registering the property under one partner’s name.

After their separation, one partner sought partition of the property, citing a signed acknowledgment in which the other admitted she had contributed about 50% of the purchase and renovation costs.

Lower courts dismissed the claim, but the Supreme Court reversed those rulings, finding the acknowledgment sufficient proof of actual contribution under Article 148.

The Court held that the petitioner is a co-owner entitled to a 50% share and may demand partition of the property in accordance with the Civil Code.

Bad Bunny’s Super Bowl show sees specific Pornhub searches boom

Pornhub has released data following Bad Bunny‘s Super Bowl Halftime show on February 8.

The website has reported an increased interest in football-themed categories, including locker-room scenarios, college athletes, cheerleaders, and latino men.

Search interest in the term “Super Bowl” jumped by an extraordinary 5,632% compared with the previous month.

Related football-themed fantasy queries also saw sharp increases, with “jock” rising by 4,244%, “horny college jock” up 2,939%, and “big d*** college jocks” climbing 958%.

Latino and Puerto Rico related search terms also experienced notable growth, likely driven by Bad Bunny’s halftime performance, which spotlighted his Puerto Rican heritage.

Searches for “amateur Latino” content rose by 880%, while “Latina solo dirty talk” increased by 479%. Meanwhile, “tattooed Latino male” climbed 470%.

Funnily enough, US Representative Andy Ogles actually likened the show to “gay pornography”.

He wrote on Facebook: “ast night’s halftime show was a disgrace, and it mocked American families. Depicting gay pornography on prime time has no place in our culture. The Bad Bunny performance is conclusive proof that Puerto Rico should never be a state.”

“Out of control”: Pete Buttigieg slams Trump for threatening to sink the US economy for his own ego

Former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg called out Donald Trump’s egocentric motivations for actions that may tank the U.S. economy.

“Today, work has stopped on America’s biggest construction project in transportation,” Buttigieg said in a video posted to social media, referring to the Gateway Tunnel that would connect New York and New Jersey, which Buttigieg called “critically important” but “badly damaged,” so there’s a project to create a new tunnel without disturbing the previous tunnel.

“If those tunnels became unavailable, you would feel the economic consequences as far away as the backyard of my home in Michigan.”

“President Trump stopped the funding for the project,” Buttigieg explained. “Not for any valid reason. He’s actually said he’ll start the project again if he gets to rename Dulles Airport and Penn Station after himself.”

“This is what happens when the president of the United States is out of control.”

Today, construction on the nation’s largest infrastructure project came to a halt – with hundreds laid off – because Donald Trump is out of control.The good news: political pressure still works, and we can use our voices to make sure he doesn’t have the last word.

Pete Buttigieg (@petebuttigieg.bsky.social) 2026-02-07T01:36:30.311Z

Buttigieg was referring to the $16 billion Hudson River Tunnel Project, which began in the Biden administration after the tunnel was badly damaged during a 2012 hurricane. The Trump administration has frozen $205 million in funding for the project since October 1, 2025, in what states that sued for the funding called a “brazen act of political retribution,” since the bridge would connect two states that voted for Kamala Harris in 2024.

Trump told reporters that he talked to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) last week about how he wanted New York’s Penn Station and D.C.’s Dulles Airport to be named after him in exchange for unfreezing the federal funding for the tunnel that was allocated by Congress.

“Chuck Schumer suggested that to me about changing the name of Penn Station to Trump Station,” he said on Air Force One. “Dulles Airport is really separate. Dulles Airport is really not too involved with Congress. That’s a separate kind of a deal, as you know.”

A federal judge gave the administration until February 12 to resume payments for the project, noting that the states that sued proved that the shutdown would have an “immediate and severe” impact.

Bash via Transpiler

It is no secret that we often use and abuse bash to write things that ought to be in a different language. But bash does have its attractions. In the modern world, it is practically everywhere. It can also be very expressive, but perhaps hard to read.

We’ve talked about Amber before, a language that is made to be easier to read and write, but transpiles to bash so it can run anywhere. The FOSDEM 2026 conference featured a paper by [Daniele Scasciafratte] that shows how to best use Amber. If you prefer slides to a video, you can read a copy of the presentation.

For an example, here’s a typical Amber script. It compiles fully to a somewhat longer bash script:

import * from "std/env"
fun example(value:Num = 1) {
   if 1 > 0 {
      let numbers = [value, value]
      let sum = 0
      loop i in numbers {
         sum += numbers[i]
    }
    echo "it's " + "me"
    return sum
   }
   fail 1
}

echo example(1) failed {
   echo "What???"
   is_command("echo")
}

The slides have even more examples. The language seems somewhat Python-like, and you can easily figure out most of it from reading the examples. While bash is nearly universal, the programs a script might use may not be. If you have it, the Amber code will employ bshchk to check dependencies before execution.

According to the slides, zsh support is on the way, too. Overall, it looks like it would be a great tool if you have to deploy with bash or even if you just want an easier way to script.

We’ve looked at Amber before. Besides, there are a ton of crazy things you can do with bash.

Adoption vs. biological family building: What LGBTQ+ couples should consider

For many LGBTQ+ people, starting to think about family-building can feel both exciting and overwhelming. There’s often a sense of real possibility paired with big questions about where to start, what’s realistic, and which information can be trusted.

After years of working with hopeful LGBTQ+ parents and hearing these same questions come up again and again, it’s clear that what many people need first isn’t pressure to decide, but rather space to understand.

There’s no single right way to become a parent, no one path is better than any other, and there’s no universal timeline for figuring it out. What can be especially helpful early on is a clear, practical understanding of how different family-building paths work in real life, not just in theory.

What follows is a grounded introduction to the two primary paths to family-building for most LGBTQ+ people today: biological family-building and adoption.

Adoption

Adoption refers to building a family by welcoming either a baby or a child who is not biologically related to you. Many people feel especially called to adoption because of personal experience, familiarity with adoption, or deeply held values around providing permanency and family connection.

It’s important to understand that adoption in the U.S. is centered around birth families, particularly in its early stages. In domestic infant adoption, expectant or biological parents play a central role in decision-making during pregnancy and before legal finalization, and many adoptions involve some level of ongoing openness. In foster care and adoption from foster care, birth families and the child welfare system are deeply involved, with reunification typically the first goal before adoption becomes an option.

The 3 Adoption Paths

Domestic infant adoption is often a wonderful path for those hoping to start their parenting journey by caring for a newborn or young baby. In some cases, adoptive parents may be involved during pregnancy or at birth, while in others, a child may be placed for adoption soon after birth.

Adoption from foster care involves caring for children of varying ages, from infants to teens, who have entered the child welfare system through no fault of their own. This path focuses on providing children with safety, stability, and permanency when reunification with their family of origin is no longer possible. It often calls for patience, flexibility, and a trauma-informed approach to parenting.

International adoption typically involves toddlers through school-aged children who are living in institutional care and are unlikely to be reunified or adopted domestically. For many of these children, international adoption represents one of the final opportunities to experience long-term stability, permanency, and family connection. Sadly, few countries allow adoption by out gay and lesbian parents from abroad, but several do, including Colombia, South Africa, and certain regions of Mexico.

While all adoption journeys involve a preparation phase that includes a home study, background checks, required paperwork, and training, the total costs depend on the adoption path you choose:

  • Domestic infant adoption typically ranges from $40,000–$60,000.
  • International adoption often falls within a similar range, with additional costs related to travel, time spent living in the country, and local legal requirements.
  • Adoption from foster care usually has minimal direct costs, with most expenses related to preparing your home to welcome a child. Depending on the state, some legal or administrative fees may be paid out of pocket and reimbursable.

Biological family-building

For LGBTQ+ people, biological family-building refers to paths that involve pregnancy and/or a genetic connection to a child, including:

  • Home insemination: Allows LGBTQ+ folks to conceive in a comfortable, private and cost-effective environment.
  • Intrauterine insemination (IUI): Sperm is inserted directly into the uterus during ovulation.
  • In vitro fertilization (IVF): An embryo is created in the lab using your egg fertilized by donor sperm and then transferred back into your uterus. For those using a surrogate, your donor egg is fertilized with your sperm and then transferred into the uterus of your surrogate.
  • Reciprocal IVF: Popular among queer couples as one partner provides the egg and the other carries the pregnancy.
  • Fertility preservation: Transgender and nonbinary people may be able to freeze eggs or sperm before transitioning. Depending on individual circumstances,  IUI, IVF, or surrogacy may be possible.

Biological family-building may appeal to people who want involvement in pregnancy and early caregiving, value a genetic connection, and feel comfortable navigating varying degrees of medical or non-medical involvement — from clinical fertility care to at-home or midwife-supported insemination. For some, these paths feel more predictable, as intended parents are generally at the center of planning and decision-making throughout the process.

Biological family-building often involves working with one or more third parties – such as a sperm donor, egg donor, and/or gestational surrogate – as well as coordinating a broader team of family-building partners that may include a midwife, fertility clinic, egg matching service, surrogacy agency, reproductive attorney, therapist, and escrow and insurance providers.

For gay men, surrogacy with IVF can range from $150,000-$240,000, or even more. For the rest of the LGBTQ+ community, costs vary significantly depending on the approach chosen. Geography, insurance coverage, and workplace benefits can also play a major role.

Key considerations

The following questions are intended to help you identify your priorities and values as you explore family-building options and consider your next steps. There are no right or wrong answers, and your responses may evolve over time.

  • How important is it to you to be involved in pregnancy, birth, or early caregiving?
  • Do you feel that a biological connection to your child or children is an important element of family?
  • How much does being at the center of decision-making matter to you?
  • How do cost differences across paths factor into your thinking?
  • How do you feel about involving third parties or maintaining openness with birth families?
  • If you plan to parent with one or more partners, how aligned do you feel about your priorities and expectations?

These aren’t the only questions to consider, but they can be a helpful place to start.

Gather, learn, reflect

Many LGBTQ+ people don’t move directly from learning to deciding. Instead, they take time to gather information, reflect on what feels right, and build confidence before making major commitments.

For those seeking structured, affirming education along the way, GWK Academy is a nonprofit organization created to support LGBTQ+ people along all family-building paths and possibilities. You’ll find inclusive educational resources like guided courses on adoption, foster care, surrogacy, and fertility; one-on-one coaching; community and mentorship; and access to a network of vetted, LGBTQ+-experienced family-building professionals.

Working to feel grounded in how the various paths work is often the most useful place to begin.

Brian Rosenberg is the Executive Director & Head Coach of GWK Academy, a non-profit with a mission to support and empower all LGBTQ+ people on their journey to parenthood through comprehensive and inclusive educational resources, peer support, coaching, and referrals to affirming partners spanning all paths and possibilities for family building.
