Pete Buttigieg: ICE & Trump are “breaking the law” & now is “make-or-break moment” for U.S.

Trump is “getting more dangerous because he’s getting weaker,” out former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg recently told MS NOW host Jen Psaki of the president’s recent attempts to forcefully obtain states’ voter rolls by using federal immigration agents and FBI raids.

“As he loses more and more favor and popularity among the American people, he’s going to continue to try to make up for that using the machinery of government that he controls,” Buttigieg continued. “But that’s perilous for him. It’s certainly perilous for the whole country.”

When asked how he would respond to Americans who are worried that Trump will try to rig the 2026 midterm elections and 2028 presidential elections, Buttigieg said, “We have to remember that elections are run close to home. They’re run by our neighbors, often county officials, sometimes volunteers working together, and that process has a ton of integrity.”

“Does this president respect the integrity of that press process? Of course, he doesn’t,” Buttigieg added. “But let’s also remember this: The ultimate backstop is the American people. Yes, we would hope it would be Congress. Certainly, we look to the courts, but at the end of the day, any of those kinds of maneuvers cannot work if the American people stand unified against them.”

“[Trump’s cronies] know they cannot outrun the will of the people, and that ultimately will be our best defense against anything that he tries to pull as Election Day draws near,” he said, adding that it will be up to the American people to hold Trump and his enablers responsible for the policies they’ve inflicted upon the country.

“This [is a] decisive moment that, I think, history will record as make-or-break for whether this country remains a free and democratic nation.”

“What ICE is doing is in no way part of any kind of reasonable, decent, or safe immigration policy and has clearly nothing to do with law-and-order because of the level of disorder they have created and because of the illegal actions of ICE — it’s not just that they’re doing a bad job, they’re hurting people … they are breaking the law,” he said

Buttigieg continued, saying he thinks “something is turning in the United States of America right now,” because Americans of every political persuasion view the violent actions of the current administration as wrong.

“I think, an extraordinary moment for people of every different political persuasion to come together and show what it looks like to be a freedom-loving country, and also just as human beings,” he said.

“When you see these kinds of images, you know, just today, an image of a woman on her porch opening the door while her home is being swarmed by about half a dozen agents — wearing more weaponry and tactical gear than we used to take with us when we were going outside the wire in Afghanistan — there’s just no way to look at that and think that that could possibly be making this country a better place,” he added.

When Psaki noted that there are still over eight months until the November midterm elections, she asked Buttigieg what advice he would have for people who feel demoralized and tired from having to constantly stand up to the current administration.

“Of course, it is asking and demanding so much, so much time, so much energy, and sadly, in the case of many protesters, more physical courage than should ever be asked of an American just exercising their First Amendment rights, but that’s where we are,” Buttigieg admitted. “And if you think about what other generations of Americans went through in order to secure and establish those freedoms, that it now falls to us to protect and expand, then we owe it to them.”

“Even more than to past generations, we owe it to a future generation,” he concluded. “We owe it to our kids’ generation to be there now, in this decisive moment that, I think, history will record as make-or-break for whether this country remains a free and democratic nation.”

Bulgarian Torrent Giants Zamunda, Zelka, and ArenaBG Seized in Joint U.S.-Bulgarian Operation

zamundaFive years ago, Bulgaria informed the U.S. authorities that it would like to shut down prominent torrent trackers such as ArenaBG, Zamunda, and Zelka.

To get that done, the Eastern European country specifically asked the U.S. Government for assistance.

Today, it appears that these shutdown plans have finally come to fruition, at least as far as the domain names go. A few hours ago, three of the largest torrent trackers became unreachable, directing users to a seizure banner.

“This domain has been seized by Homeland Security Investigations as part of an international law enforcement operation in accordance with a court order issued by the United States District Court for the Southern District of Mississippi,” the banner reads.

The listed law enforcement logos are, from left to right:

  • U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) – United States
  • Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) – United States
  • National IPR Coordination Center – United States
  • Europol – European Union
  • GDBOP (General Directorate for Combating Organized Crime) – Bulgaria
  • National Investigative Service (НСлС) – Bulgaria
  • State Agency for National Security (DANS) – Bulgaria
  • Prosecutor’s Office of the Republic of Bulgaria – Bulgaria

The order issued by the Mississippi federal court purportedly compelled the domain name registrars or the domain registries to take action. With domain names linked to American domain intermediaries, this explains why it would be crucial for the U.S. to be involved.

At the time of writing, ArenaBG.com, Zamunda.net, and Zelka.org all point to seizedservers.com nameservers, which means that the domains are now controlled by the U.S. authorities.

To give an idea of the popularity of these sites, Zamunda.net was up until recently the 11th most visited website in Bulgaria with millions of monthly visitors.

The authorities in Bulgaria previously said that “pre-trial proceedings were opened” against torrent trackers for “intellectual property and tax crimes.” However, it is not clear if today’s actions go beyond the domain seizures.

In the past, Bulgaria has asked the U.S. for assistance to seize the physical servers of Zamunda. However, thus far there is no information about additional enforcement actions. We have also yet to see a press release from the authorities formally confirming the action.

If the current action is limited to the domain names the sites will likely switch to alternative ones, as we have seen with other seizures in the past.

Rare-Earth-Free Magnets With High Entropy Borides

Although most of us simultaneously accept the premise that magnets are quite literally everywhere and that few people know how they work, a major problem with magnets today is that they tend to rely on so-called rare-earth elements. Although firmly in the top 5 of misnomers, these abundant elements are hard to mine and isolate, which means that finding alternatives to their use is much desired. Fortunately the field of high entropy alloys (HEAs) offers hope here, with [Beeson] and colleagues recently demonstrating a rare-earth-free material that could be used for magnets.

Although many materials can be magnetic, to make a good magnet you need the material in question to be both magnetically anisotropic and posses a clear easy axis. This basically means a material that has strong preferential magnetic directions, with the easy axis being the orientation which is the most energetically favorable.

Through experimental validation with magnetic coercion it was determined that of the tested boride films, the (FeCoNiMn)2B variant with a specific deposition order showed the strongest anisotropy. What is interesting in this study is how much the way that the elements are added and in which way determines the final properties of the boride, which is one of the reasons why HEAs are such a hot topic of research currently.

Of course, this is just an early proof-of-concept, but it shows the promise of HEAs when it comes to replacing other types of anisotropic materials, in particular where – as noted in the paper – normally rare-earths are added to gain the properties that these researchers achieved without these elements being required.

Stop Killing Games Gets Over 1 Million Petition Signatures Verified By EU

I’ve been talking about the Stop Killing Games movement for some time now, so important is its mission to me. This collection of volunteers focused on video game and cultural preservation is attempting to whip up public support for legislation to achieve those goals. Currently focused in the EU, the campaign is built primarily on legislating the following rules:

  • Games sold must be left in a functional state
  • Games sold must require no further connection to the publisher or affiliated parties to function
  • The above also applies to games that have sold microtransactions to customers
  • The above cannot be superseded by end user license agreements

If you can find fault in any of the above, tell me what that would be in the comments. I personally see no such flaws. I particularly can’t find them in the context of a present reality in which games that people paid very real money for are ripped from their digital hands because publishers simply stop supporting them (online games) or because they were designed with planned obsolescence included (single player games that sunset when they can’t check in with servers (hi there, NBA2K games!)).

In order to compel the EU Parliament to take up the issue in session, the petition needed to achieve 1 million signatures. That happened last summer. Step 2 in the process is a review by the EU to validate those signatures, to be sure there is no shady fuckery in them. And that just happened, with the petition boasting one of the smallest percentage of invalidated signatures in memory.

Stop Killing Games volunteer Moritz Katzner has shared an update on the popular European Union Citizens’ Initiative to its official subreddit. The EU has successfully verified 1,294,188 of Stop Killing Games’ 1,448,270 signatures, easily clearing the one million minimum count it needed to move forward in the process.

In the comments, user MikeyIfYouWanna calculated that about 89% of the submitted signatures were legitimate. Katzner agreed, estimating that Stop Killing Games has one of the top three lowest failed signature rates among EU Citizens’ Initiatives.

“We’re sitting at around 10%, while the best-performing initiatives tend to fall in the 10–15% range, which puts us firmly in the upper bracket,” Katzner wrote. “Some initiatives see failure rates as high as 20–25% and still manage to get over the line, but it’s worth noting that the overall sample size is quite small, only 11 initiatives.”

Now, I will admit that I am no expert in how the EU legislative process works, nor how it interacts with the laws of its member countries. Over on the Stop Killing Games subreddit, where this signature achievement was announced, several commenters appeared aligned on how this works moving forward. Here is the best of them, from user AShortUsernameIndeed.

There’s a few steps. The EU issues regulations (which are EU-wide laws) and directives (which are guidelines for national legislation). Since this initiative is framed as a consumer rights issue, the most that can come out of it on the EU level is a directive (because the EU does not have direct legislative powers on consumer rights). The actual laws will then be written by the legislatures of each member country, separately. So the steps are:

  • get the EU commission and parliament to decide to legislate, then
  • lobby them to get a directive that actually does what the initiative wants, then
  • lobby the parliaments of all 27 member states to get the directive transformed into laws that actually do what the initiative wants.

That’s a few years of work ahead, in the best case. We’ll see what happens.

That looks correct, from my own poking around. And it does indeed mean that there are both years of work ahead before this turns into actual European laws and there are millions of lobbying dollars to overcome. But it’s progress, if only incremental.

And while video game preservation has long been important to me, I will admit I never thought I’d see the day when a governmental body such as the EU Parliament would actually take up the issue. Through the power of the internet, a collective appreciation for the preservation of culture, and volunteer work, however, it appears that will happen at the very least.
