After having been sent a vacuum fluorescent display (VFD) based clock for a review, [Anthony Francis-Jones] took the opportunity to explain how these types of displays work.

Although VFDs are generally praised for their very pleasant appearance, they’re also relatively low-power compared to the similar cathode ray tubes. The tungsten wire cathode with its oxide coating produces the electrons whenever the relatively low supply voltage is applied, with a positively charged grid between it and the phosphors on the anode side inducing the accelerating force.

Although a few different digit control configurations exist, all VFDs follow this basic layout. The reason why they’re also called ‘cold cathode’ displays is because the cathode doesn’t heat up nearly as hot as those of a typical vacuum tube, at a mere 650 °C. Since this temperature is confined to the very fine cathode mesh, this is not noticeable outside of the glass envelope.

While LCDs and OLED displays have basically eradicated the VFD market, these phosphor-based displays still readily beat out LCDs when it comes to viewing angles, lack of polarization filter, brightness and low temperature performance, as LC displays become extremely sluggish in cold weather. Perhaps their biggest flaw is the need for a vacuum to work, inside very much breakable glass, as this is usually how VFDs die.

Enoch Burke has once again been jailed after once again refusing to follow a court order by once again lingering around the entrance of the secondary school he was fired from.

The fired school teacher and staunch evangelist was sent back to Mountjoy Jail this week for yet again ignoring the High Court’s instructions to stay away from Wilson’s Hospital School in Co Westmeath, Ireland.

Dubbed by a court judge as a “baleful and malign presence”, Mr Burke is believed to have spent a combined 550 days, including two Christmases, in jail, as well as a combined €225,000 (£198,118) in fines.

He continues to insist that the arrests are over his views on what he describes as “transgenderism”, despite High Court Justice Brian Cregan frequently reminding him that it is over his refusal to abide by the court’s instructions.

So how many times has Enoch Burke been arrested since he was fired from his teaching position in 2022? Here is a full timeline.

June 2022: Enoch Burke’s confrontation with head teacher

In August 2022, Enoch Burke was suspended from his teaching position at Wilson’s Hospital School following a June confrontation with the school’s head teacher over a transgender student’s pronouns.

During a Church service at the boarding school, senior staff announced that the student had begun using they/them pronouns, asking participants to respect the student’s identity.

According to the Irish Independent, Mr Burke, a member of the infamous Christian fundamentalist Burke family, interrupted the service to declare his refusal to use the correct pronouns for the students.

He then pursued and “loudly” questioned the school’s principal, Ms Niamh McShane, over the school’s stance on what he routinely dubs “transgenderism”.

Despite the school’s Board placing him on administrative leave pending the outcome of a disciplinary process, Mr Burke returned to the school grounds the next day, telling staff “I am here to work” and “I am here to attend a meeting”.

August 2022: High Court grants injunction ordering Enoch Burke to stay away from school grounds

Following the incident, a High Court granted Wilson’s Hospital School a preliminary injunction ordering Mr Burke to stay away from school grounds pending the disciplinary judgment.

Solicitor Rosemary Mallon BL sought the injunction on behalf of the school over fears that his refusal to stay away from the school would negatively impact students starting the academic year. A substitute teacher was hired to teach his classes.

High Court justice Siobhán Stack ruled that he could not return to the school’s premises, nor could he teach any classes or students, until the matter returned to the court the following week.

However, Mr Burke ignored the order, attending the school on two separate occasions in early September of that year.

September 2022: Enoch Burke is arrested and jailed for the first time

A further court order was requested by the school over Mr Burke’s refusal to follow the High Court’s instructions, stipulating that he would be jailed for contempt of court should he continue to return to the school.

Justice Miriam O’Regan granted the order and, on 5 September 2022, Mr Burke was arrested and remanded to Mountjoy Prison in Dublin after failing to appear at the High Court earlier that week.

On 7 September, during an enforced appearance before the Court, justice Max Barrett said he would remain in jail until he purges his contempt or until further order of the court.

Mr Burke responded saying he could not purge his contempt by holding his Christian beliefs in contempt, according to RTE. He remained in jail until December 2022.

January 2023: Enoch Burke is fired from Wilson’s Hospital School

Mr Burke was formally dismissed from his teaching role on 20 January 2023 following a disciplinary hearing earlier in the month. Despite this, he continued to return to the school grounds.

After breaching the injunction multiple times in just a few days, he was arrested on trespassing charges. Justice Brian O’Moore ruled that he was to be fined €700 (£611) every day until he purged his contempt. It was said in court that the fine, which amounted to almost €5,000 a week, “should persuade Mr Burke to end his utterly pointless attendance at a school which does not want him on its property”.

During this time, Mr Burke returned to the school gates nearly every single week day for over six months. By February 2023, Mr Burke’s actions had become so frequent that Fred Phelps Jr of the notorious Westboro Baptist Church said that he thought the former teacher had “gone too far”.

September 2023: Enoch Burke is jailed for a second time

On 9 September 2023, after breaching the order yet again the previous month, Mr Burke was sent back to Mountjoy Prison for a second time.

Now facing fines of over €140,000 for refusing to purge his contempt, Mr Burke yet again refused to abide by the court order while at a December 2023 hearing. This was the first time Mr Burke spent Christmas in jail.

At this point, Mr Burke’s family had begun regularly interrupting court hearings related to Mr Burke. Footage taken at the time shows members of the Burke family being forcefully dragged outside by Gardaí whilst screaming about “transgenderism”.

Mr Burke wouldn’t be released again until June 2024. During this period, he was allegedly kept isolated from fellow inmates for refusing to stay silent about his Christian fundamentalist beliefs.

June 2024: Enoch Burke is released from jail and reimprisoned for a third time

Just a few weeks after his release from jail in late June 2024, Mr Burke once again returned to the school grounds, entering one of the school’s buildings on one occasion. He was jailed for a third time in September.

Asked again whether he would abide by the order during an October 2024 hearing, Mr Burke once again refused. He was later released in December 2024

November 2025: Enoch Burke, now owing €200,000 in fines, is arrested for a fourth time

By November 2025 Mr Burke had been intermittently in jail for just over 500 days and accumulated over €200,000 in fines.

A High Court judge ordered on 18 November 2025 that he be remanded yet again to Mountjoy Prison for misconduct for refusing to stay away from the school. He once again spent Christmas in jail.

During this time, Justice Cregan described Mr Burke as a “baleful and malign presence” and an “intruder, stalking the school, its teachers, and its pupils”.

January 2026: Enoch Burke is released and jailed in less than a week

In the space of just days, Enoch Burke was released from, and sent back to, Mountjoy Prison for yet again breaching an almost three-year-old court order to stay away from Wilson’s Hospital School.

He was arrested on 19 January and jailed after Justice Cregan said he was satisfied that Mr Burke had once again breached the High Court’s order.

The former teacher has spent approximately 550 total days in prison, has been jailed on five separate occasions, and faces fines of over €225,000 (£198,118).

Right-wing rage baiters are up in arms following the release of the first Masters of The Universe movie trailer due to one fleeting scene showing He-Man’s, erm, pronouns.

Nicholas Galitzine of Red, White & Royal Blue fame stars in the live-action Masters of the Universe movie as Adam Glenn turned buff and sword-baring hero He-Man.

The film follows Mr Adam on his mother’s homeland of Earth, living a seemingly ordinary human life, though he soon realises he must return to his planet of Eternia in order to reconnect with the Sword of Power and become the icon most know him as: He-Man. 

Enter Thirty Seconds to Mars frontman and controversial Dallas Buyers Club star Jared Leto as villain Skeletor, whom He-Man must defeat with the help of the remaining warriors on Eternia.

On Thursday (22 January) Amazon MGM Studios dropped the first trailer for one of 2026’s most anticipated movies, featuring Galitzine as the scantily-clad fierce fighter in waiting. It’s a cinematic spectacle wrapped up in two short minutes, featuring explosions, spacecrafts, monsters and of course, an abundance of sword fights.

Yet despite the visual feast, rage baiters have fixated on one brief moment where Adam, still enduring his average Joe human life, has his name and pronouns, he/him, written on a placard on his desk at his office job.

Though it’s obviously a tongue-in-cheek nod to Adam’s future title of He-Man, some have let the joke go way over their heads.

“Now they’re making a Masters of the Universe and giving He-man pronouns. These people won’t stop until they ruin everything,” wrote one author on a book about “Christian values” on X, formerly Twitter.

“They’re giving He-Man pronouns,” another user responded, drolly pointing out the obvious joke. Mercifully, the smart reply has received more than 150,000 ‘likes’ on the platform.

“New Masters of The Universe movie is going to be woke garbage,” another winged.

Another lamented the film for featuring “forced diversity”, as a fourth promised that there is “no chance” they would be “wasting [their] money on this pathetic c**p,” adding, and we quote: “Go wike go broke.”

Thankfully, hundreds of other social media users are pointing out the very clear joke in including He-Man’s pronouns in the trailer.

‘He-Man. His name is He-Man. They’re not giving him pronouns in 2026. He literally is a sword-wielding pronoun. That’s the gag here,” one user wrote.

In addition to Nicholas Galtzine and Jared Leto, Masters of The Universe will star Camila Mendes, Alison Brie, Idris Elba, Morena Baccarin, Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson, Sasheer Zamata, James Purefoy, and Charlotte Riley.

Masters of The Universe will be released on 5 June 2026.

The 31-year-old “As It Was” hitmaker will set off on the Together, Together tour in May that stretches through the rest of 2026. 

He’ll kick things off in Amsterdam on May 16 for six nights. Then he’ll return home for a six-night stint at Wembley Stadium, London. 

Styles will then head to São Paulo, Mexico City and New York. The latter will see him embark on a massive 30-night run at the iconic Madison Square Garden.

The tour will conclude in Australia with two nights in Melbourne and two nights in Sydney.

The Together, Together tour follows the success of Love On Tour, stretching from 2021 to 2023; the shows became the eighth-most attended tour in history. 

Who is supporting the Harry Styles Together, Together tour?

There are a number of exciting musicians joining Harry Styles on his Together, Together tour.

Among the names, LGBTQ+ icons Robyn and Shania Twain will be opening the show before the main man emerges.

For fans of manga and manhwa comics, Bato.to has been an icon for many years.

The pirate site has reportedly changed owners over the years, but through the main site and dozens of mirrors, it kept its many millions of monthly visitors on board.

Since last November, the site has not been running smoothly, however. Several moderators reported that the site’s operator, Larry, had become unreachable, which resulted in various technical problems.

Batoto Communities Shut Down

Earlier this week, the trouble appeared to worsen when the official Batoto Discord server, run by the moderation team, announced that it would shut down as well, citing legal challenges and ongoing issues with the site. This effectively confirmed that the site’s moderators were throwing in the towel.

Not much later, the official Batoto subreddit followed the same route. While it would not shut down completely, the moderators officially cut its ties with anything piracy or Batoto-related.

“Due to recent legal developments, it is clear that all activity, discussion, or support related to the former website and its services has permanently ended,” the subreddit mods wrote.

“Out of respect for creators, rights holders, and applicable laws, this subreddit will no longer be affiliated with, connected to, or associated with the website in any way.”

The seemingly obligatory mention of supporting legal services suggests that this soft shutdown was also the result of legal action. In fact, it appears that Batoto-related people and communication channels are targeted across the board.

This includes newly launched Discord channels. Only those who abide by a strict set of rules to ban any type of infringement appear to survive. This includes the newly launched Yoru reading community, which specifically prohibits illegal content, pointing people to official Webtoon and Tapas releases instead.

Kakao Entertainment Takes Credit

While it is clear that legal pressure is being applied, the source remained unmentioned. Today we can officially confirm that Kakao Entertainment is driving the action.

Through its dedicated anti-piracy enforcement arm, P.CoK, the South Korean entertainment giant is categorically targeting Bato.to and many related people and services.

The most significant blow to the operation is the identification of Bato.to’s founder and core developer. P.CoK confirmed to TorrentFreak that they have tracked the individual to their country of residence, where legal proceedings are now active.

Responding to this threat, the P.CoK team tackled the problem from multiple sides. In addition to preparing a lawsuit against the operator, it went after other key channels, including the aforementioned communities on Reddit and Discord.

“We adopted a strategy that categorizes individuals involved in the operation into multiple tiers and applies tailored countermeasures to each group. Legal proceedings are currently underway in the country of residence of the founder and core developer,” P.CoK notes.

Cease and Desist

The people in lower tiers, including admins and moderators, were also identified. These all received personalized cease-and-desist letters, urging them to shut down their operation, or else.

“We have identified the majority of individuals who are directly or indirectly involved in the operation—such as sub-developers, moderators, and community administrators—and have sequentially issued Cease and Desist (C&D) letters to them,” P.CoK told us.

These cease-and-desist notices came with the relevant legal justification and a specific set of actions these people were expected to take. That likely means showing respect for rightsholders, as we have seen in a few of the public responses.

New Targets?

A final update by the subreddit team confirms the pressure from Kakao Entertainment. Clearly worried that ‘Reddit mods could be next,’ the subreddit was set to restricted.

The subreddit also clearly distances itself from a new Batoto-‘inspired’ site that surfaced online this week.

P.CoK, which has a history of unconventional but effective anti-piracy actions, will undoubtedly keep an eye on any new sites that emerge. At the same time, it is also going after MangaPark and AniXL, which have repeatedly been linked to Batoto. In fact, the anti-piracy group notes that new legal proceedings are already being prepared.

“We are aware that some of these individuals are also involved in the operation of MangaPark and AniXL, and we are preparing strong legal actions against Mangapark as well as newly established Bato-affiliated sites,” P.CoK concludes, suggesting that their work is not done yet.

Heated Rivalry stars Hudson Williams and Connor Storrie are among the torch bearers set to carry the Winter Olympic Flame for Milano Cortina 2026, and fans of the hit hockey drama are going wild.

The stars have been selected as torch bearers during the Olympic Torch Relay, which will conclude on 6 February in Milan. 

Their participation was confirmed in a release on Thursday (22 January), which described the series as being “very successful in the countries where it has been broadcast so far”. 

Heated Rivalry, an adaption of Rachel Reid’s Game Changers novel series, follows two rising stars in the ice hockey world – closeted Canadian prodigy Shane (Williams) and bisexual Russian star (Storrie) – who begin an illicit, closeted romance. 

Following the show airing, the pair quickly became the internet’s boyfriends, thanks to their steamy scenes.

Fans reacted joyfully to the news that Williams and Storrie would be part of the Olympic Torch Relay. One simply said: “God I love this for them.” Another added “our bbys back together” with two sobbing emojis. A third called it an “insane honor.”

Late last year, in welcome news for fans, the show was renewed for a second run by Crave and HBO Max. The second series will be inspired by Reid’s book The Long Game and will introduce a new couple. 

Reid shared that the two new characters will be drawn from another book, she said: “I think it’s going to be mostly The Long Game… but there’s another book, Role Model, that kind of overlaps it.”

Role Model focuses on Troy Barrett and Harris Drover, whose love story could run alongside Shane and Ilya’s.  

Real life hockey couple Anna Kjellbin and Ronja Savolainen, who play on different teams in the Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL), will face off against each other at the Winter Olympics in northeastern Italy. The couple are engaged to be married.

The Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026 will be broadcast across Europe by HBO Max, which has the rights to the Crave Original series. In the US, the games will be broadcast on NBC and streamed live on Peacock. 

In Italy, Heated Rivalry will broadcast from February on HBO Max.

The BBC has issued an official apology to a radio host who experienced homophobic abuse while working at the corporation.

Radio presenter Jack Murley alleged that during his time at the BBC, where he worked as a presenter for BBC Radio Cornwall for five years, staff members used the homophobic slurs “poof” and “fairy boy” in his presence; he was told by another that gay people are “a lot more likely to die of AIDS”

Murley said he was also subject to homophobic abuse from listeners in the form of emails, texts, and phone calls, including one incident where Bible verses and homophobic remarks were sent to him in an envelope.

The 37-year-old presenter raised this abuse with a manager who told him it was not his job to deal with the abuse and instructed him to sound “less gay” on air.

Murley said in a social media statement issued in December 2025 – following the outcome of an employment tribunal – that he met “in-person” with senior members of the BBC’s management to “receive a formal, full and unconditional apology” for “homophobic and discriminatory abuse” he experienced.

When asked about this, however, the BBC did not acknowledge the alleged in-person meeting and a spokesperson simply said the broadcaster “welcomed the tribunal judgement” and “won’t be commenting further”.

Murley was sacked in 2024 after he shared social media posts that criticised cuts to local radio. The BBC said the posts breached its editorial and social media policies, whilst also failing to be impartial.

Murley took the BBC to employment tribunal in which he alleged he was discriminated against for being a gay man as well as a union representative for the National Union of Journalists (NUJ).

Employment judge Alastair Smail ruled, however, that Murley’s sacking was not a result of discrimination over his sexuality and in a subsequent decision also judged the BBC’s dismissal had been “reasonable”.

Despite this, a separate internal investigation at the BBC allegedly found several instances of Murley experiencing homophobic treatment at the hands of BBC employees and there were “managerial failings” in handling this.

The BBC has now acknowledged its apology to Murley, in a news story published on the broadcasters own website.

“We have worked hard to change the culture for the better”

In a letter addressed to Murley, Jason Horton – the BBC’s chief operating officer across Nations – apologised for “the behaviours and comments” he was subjected to at the corporation.

“We have worked hard to change the culture for the better across management and the wider team,” Horton said, noting work had been undertaken to implement recommendations for change set out by the internal review.

In response, Murley said he was “grateful” to former colleagues at the BBC who provided witness evidence on his behalf.

“At a time when I was producing an award-winning LGBTQ+ show for the BBC, I was being subjected to the kind of homophobic and bigoted behaviours from BBC staff members that would have been unacceptable decades ago – let alone in a modern workplace,” he explained.

Murley went on to say: “I am glad that the BBC has finally admitted that people in positions of power created and sustained an environment in which my abuse was explicitly and implicitly tolerated by those who should have been expected to stop it.”

In a post on social media, Murley said: “I can’t begin to tell you how much it has taken to reach this stage, and no victim of abuse should ever have to work this hard to have what they went through acknowledged.”

He went on to stay this outcome was down to the collective effort of himself, the NUJ, his current and former MPs – Ben Maguire and Scott Mann respectively, and “numerous members of my legal team and a whole host of others to move the BBC from a position where it flatly denied that I was the victim of abuse to one where it has had to formally apologise for the fact that I spent years being subjected to homophobic, inappropriate and discriminatory behaviour”.

He added: “I was telling the truth all along.”

In a statement, a BBC spokesperson said: “While we don’t comment on individual cases, we take any reports of our workplace values not being upheld extremely seriously.

“If we receive information or allegations to suggest this is not the case we have robust processes in place to investigate. The BBC is an inclusive organisation and discrimination of any kind is not tolerated.”
